markets Target Action Bill President students Diversity Trump seeks to bar student loan relief to workers aiding migrants and transgender kids
Trump signed an executive order instructing administration officials to alter a student loan forgiveness program for public servants to exclude nonprofit organizations that engage in activities that have what he called a «substantial illegal purpose.» His order to restrict the program appears to target groups supporting immigrants in the country illegally, diversity initiatives or gender-affirming care for children, among others, as the Trump administration has sought to eliminate federal support for efforts that have drawn right-wing ire. The order, made public Friday, is the latest of many attempts to overhaul the loan forgiveness program, which has often whipsawed borrowers with rule changes and bureaucratic obstacles.

markets Provident Progressive students Experts Department Courts Trump reverses Biden's Student Loan Forgiveness plan: Here's how it will affect millions borrowers
Department of Education has taken down applications for all income-driven repayment (IDR) plans, which are designed to keep monthly payments manageable and provide a pathway to eventual loan forgiveness. The move affects four popular IDR programs: Income-Based Repayment (IBR), Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), and the new SAVE (Saving on a Valuable Education) plan introduced by the Biden administration in 2023. These plans base payments on a borrower’s income and family size, with remaining balances forgiven after 20 or 25 years. The department did not make a formal announcement about the removal of IDR applications, instead posting a brief notice on its website. The lack of communication has led to widespread confusion, with borrowers and advocates scrambling for clarity.

markets UPS Discover WhatsApp students Universities Study abroad turns into stash cash abroad; RBI takes note
The «misuse» of a 20-year-old foreign exchange rule, originally intended to make life easier for young Indians attending foreign universities, is believed to have drawn the attention of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), sources told ET. In 2003, the central bank allowed students going abroad to study to be treated as 'non-resident Indians' (NRIs). The regulation was issued to primarily help students who take up jobs in a foreign land to supplement their income. Until then, they were considered 'residents'. Since 'residents' are required under the law to send their foreign earnings back home, the rule was meant to shield working students from unwittingly breaching the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) which was enforced in 2000.
