Allahabad High Court strikes down UP Madrasa Act
Allahabad High Court on Friday declared the UP Board of Madrasa Education Act, 2004, as unconstitutional, ruling that it was violative of the principle of secularism, articles 14, 21, 21-A of the Constitution as well as section 22 of the University Grants Commission, Act of 1956. The court, considering the large number of madrasas and madrasa students in the state, directed the state government to accommodate these students in regular schools recognised under the primary, high school and intermediate education boards of the state. It also said that additional seats be created (in these schools) and even new schools be established, if needed. The court gave the verdict on a plea filed by advocate Anshuman Singh Rathore, who had challenged the constitutionality of the law passed by the then Mulayam Singh Yadav government .«No doubt the state has sufficient power to frame laws with regard to education to be provided at school level, both primary and thereafter up to intermediate; however, such education has to be secular in nature,» the court said. «The state has no power to create a board for religious education or to establish a board for school education only for a particular religion and philosophy associated with it. Any such action on part of the state violates the principles of secularism, which is in the letter and spirit of the Constitution of India.»

IITians spar over study hours for JEE exam preparation: 'Time Pass Nahi Karta Tha'
JEE aspirant recently surfaced on X, shedding light on the dedication needed to excel in exams like the JEE for admission to esteemed institutions like the IITs. After the handwritten timetable belonged to a 17-year-old preparing for the JEE, a debate has broken out on social media over the number of hours needed for preparation for IIT-JEE exam. Shared by a user named «Mr Rc,» the schedule of a 17-yeardepicted a challenging routine, with the student rising at 4:30 am after just 4.5 hours of sleep. The entire day was dedicated to preparation, with only two 15-minute naps and breaks for meals. Many IITians reacted to this post. Aman Goel, CEO of GreyLabs AI and an IIT Bombay alumnus, criticized the post as exaggerated, stating that he and many other typical IITians he studied for 8 to 10 hours daily, occasionally extending to 12 to 14 hours during demanding periods. Despite occasional long hours, Mr Goel said, he ensured 8 hours of sleep daily and balanced his schedule with leisure activities and family time. Like many others, Goel began preparing for the IIT JEE at 15 and appeared for the exam at 17. He also highlighted the studying habits of his IITian friends, asserting that none, including top rankers, studied as intensely as portrayed in the viral post.

Canada is planning to curb the number of temporary foreign workers for the first time ever
Canada is set to implement measures to curb the influx of temporary foreign workers for the first time, as announced by officials on Thursday. Ottawa aims to reduce the number of temporary residents to five percent of the population over the next three years, down from the current 6.2 percent, which translates to 2.5 million people. The proposed target will be solidified following consultations with Canada's provinces, some of which have expressed concerns over significant migrant inflows amid housing shortages and increased demands for services. Restrictions on temporary foreign worker permits are scheduled to commence on May 1. This decision comes on the heels of a recent announcement imposing a cap on new permits for international students and introducing visa requirements for certain Mexican travelers.
