Rishi Sunak earned £2.23 million in 2023, here is how much tax he paid last year
Rishi Sunak has published his tax document summary, showing that he paid more than £508,308 as his total income rose to £2.23 million last year, 13% up from the previous year. The British prime minister also realized £1.8 million profit from his investment in a US fund. Sunak’s effective tax rate was 23%, lower than the top rate of 45%, due to some income being taxed at source in the US and the capital gains tax rate being 20%.

The last utopias, rants galore notwithstanding
British empire — while the audience wonders whether some free snacks and free books could be finagled at the end of it. Quite often, they fail. Having attended three literature festivals this year back-to-back, I've concluded that it is possible to have a wonderful time once you've avoided crowds chasing unlikely heartthrob Sudha Murty and English thesaurus on the cheap Shashi Tharoor, the former actually requiring a bodyguard to protect her from demanding schoolchildren and college students (and one Narayana Murthy fan). This is the first time I've seen a children's book author requiring a bodyguard. The first festival I went to this season was in Bangalore. And it was around a swimming pool. (Whyever not?). Apart from literature, there was a lot of startup wisdom, as expected in Nilekani City. What's very zeitgeist in India now is someone whose startup has made a few hundred crores, has a podcast, and is a mid-30s philosopher, holding forth on everything from the number of steps a day necessary to how FDs will ruin you, to the toxicity in tonic.

Paris opening River Seine for swimming after 100-year closure
Paris, France, is allowing residents to swim in the river Seine again for the first time in a century this weekend.France’s capital has been making efforts to clean the waters since 2018 as part of the city’s objective to revive the river’s ecosystem and ensure that it is safe for use in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games and other swimming events. The Seine was used for swimming competitions during the last Olympics hosted by Paris more than 100 years ago, in 1900, and for recreation until swimming was banned in 1926 due to pollution concerns. The Olympic Torch was unveiled on the banks of the Seine on July 25, marking one year before the opening of the games. The World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup 2023 is taking place this weekend in the river, but one race was postponed due to rainfall causing Seine water quality to fall “below acceptable standards for swimmers’ health,” the French Swimming Federation said in a news release. The women’s race, initially planned for Saturday, Aug. 5, has been pushed to Sunday, Aug.
