Telcos target 10% share of all global 6G patents in 3 years
India's telcos have set 3-year deadline to grab a 10% share of all future 6G-related global patents filings and also make a sixth of contributions towards development of global telecom standards. The proposal came up during a meeting of the telecom department's advisory panel with telcos that was chaired by communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia Friday. «India has already taken various initiatives like launch of Bhart6G Vision and Bhart6G Alliance, patent and IPR support framework, commissioning of testbeds, and the country can aspire for achieving 10% of all 6G patents and 1/6th contributions to global standards promoting India's needs,» the communications ministry said in a statement Saturday.

US military says drone strike in Syria kills a Saudi militant from an al-Qaida-linked group
drone strike in northwestern Syria on Friday killed a Saudi militant from an al-Qaida-linked group as he was riding on a motorcycle, the U.S. military and a war monitor said. The strike in the Jabal al-Zawiya area of the opposition-held Idlib province was carried out by a U.S.-led coalition that was established years ago to fight the militant Islamic State group. The U.S. military has carried out a series of attacks over the past several years targeting al-Qaida-linked militants in northwestern Syria.

Meta says Iranian group tried to target Trump, Biden officials' WhatsApp accounts
Meta said on Friday it had identified possible hacking attempts on the WhatsApp accounts of U.S. officials from the administrations of both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, blaming the same Iranian hacker group revealed earlier this month to have compromised the Trump campaign. In a blog post, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp described the attempt as a «small cluster of likely social engineering activity on WhatsApp» involving accounts posing as technical support for AOL, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. It blocked the accounts after users reported the activity as suspicious and had not seen any evidence suggesting the targeted WhatsApp accounts had been compromised, it said.

Not upset about MPC view, flexible inflation targeting has helped: J.R. Varma
India's flexible inflation targeting has been a useful tool to deal with unexpected shocks of various kinds, said Jayanth Varma, the Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) consistent dissenter who attended his last meeting as an external member in August. Since his first meeting at the Reserve Bank of India's rate-setting panel four years ago, Varma's view on interest rates and monetary policy stance has diverged from the consensus opinion. At a time of accommodative monetary policy after the pandemic outbreak, Varma had argued for normalizing the policy stance.

Land row: Top Congress leadership backs Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah
Congress high command threw its weight behind Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah over land allotment controversy and termed it as a BJP plot to destabilise the state government. Siddaramaih and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar travelled to Delhi on Friday afternoon for a meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and senior party leaders to discuss political developments in Karnataka. This was their second visit to Delhi within a month. Emerging from the meeting, Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala told reporters that this was BJP's ploy to target their "Dalit chief minister". «We stand behind our chief minister and stand united,» said Surjewala. The meeting came amid a controversy over land allotments in Mysuru to Siddaramaiah's wife. On August 16, Karnataka Governor granted sanction to three private individuals to file a police complaint against the CM and others.

Starbucks' new CEO arrives with more power
Starbucks' incoming CEO Brian Niccol will have more power than his predecessor. Niccol, who is leaving Chipotle Mexican Grill, will become CEO and chairman the moment he joins Starbucks on September 9. By contrast, Laxman Narasimhan spent more than five months as the CEO-in-training under company patriarch Howard Schultz and he never took on the board chairman position. Only after an intense period of shadowing Schultz did he gain the ability to set the company's strategy. The vastly different handovers underscore the two executives' contrasting resumes-Narasimhan had no restaurant experience while Niccol has spent 20 years as a leader at Chipotle and Yum! Brands.

Fed's Powell says 'time has come' to cut interest rates
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said on Friday «the time has come» for the U.S. central bank to cut interest rates as rising risks to the job market left no room for further weakness and inflation was in reach of the Fed's 2% target, offering an explicit endorsement of an imminent policy easing. «The upside risks to inflation have diminished. And the downside risks to employment have increased,» Powell said in a highly anticipated speech to the Kansas City Fed's annual economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. «The time has come for policy to adjust. The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.» Referencing the two goals that the Fed is tasked by Congress to achieve, Powell said his «confidence has grown that inflation is on a sustainable path back to 2%,» after rising to about 7% during the COVID-19 pandemic, while unemployment is increasing.

India should retain headline inflation as target, external rate panel members say
target for monetary policy rather than switching to core inflation, external members of the central bank's rate panel told Reuters. A suggestion was made in the government's official annual economic report last month to target inflation excluding volatile food prices, which are driven more by supply shortages. The idea has ignited a debate in India over the appropriate target for monetary policy. India adopted the inflation targeting framework in 2016, setting a 4% headline inflation target for the central bank's rate setting panel.

Aussie regulator wins case against Kraken crypto exchange operator on distribution flaws
Australia's Federal Court ruled on Friday that the operator of the Kraken crypto exchange failed to comply with the design and distribution obligations for its margin trading product, Australia's corporate regulator said. Bit Trade Pty is the operator of the Kraken crypto exchange, one of world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, in Australia. In September 2023, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) initiated civil proceedings against Bit Trade alleging that Bit Trade, a subsidiary of U.S. Payward Incorporated, failed to make a target market determination for the product before offering it to customers, despite being notified of concerns.

What to expect from Powell's speech at Jackson Hole? Nadia Elbilassy answers
«The S&P is still above 5600, has rebounded almost every single thing that it has lost that day. So, I think the more that we get clarity on this type of data, then the more that we are going to see markets factor in more than 100 basis rate cuts by the end of the year,» says Nadia Elbilassy, Sr Market Analyst, Equiti Group. Now, dovish minutes really coming in from the Fed, decreased risks to inflation, labour markets are also at a better place is a sense that seems to be coming out. So, are the markets then factoring in one cut and what do you really make of the minutes? Nadia Elbilassy: Yes, markets are pricing in by 60% that we are going to see a 25 basis point rate cut in September and 30% 50 basis point. So, there is still a division, but it is definitely lower than the past few months, especially after the very weak NFP payrolls that we saw.
