Lok Sabha Polls: Scenic Pollachi sees ADMK-DMK-BJP battle
Coimbatore there's a scenic constituency which is also witnessing a three-cornered fight, cementing the belief that the BJP is specifically targeting the Kongu belt to dismantle the Dravidian parties' stronghold in the region. The Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency is gearing up for a triangular fight between the AIADMK, DMK and BJP. The BJP, much like in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore, has fielded its own candidate, K Vasantha Rajan, against the DMK's K Eswarasamy and the AIADMK's A Karthikeyan. All three parties have fielded fresh faces in the constituency, with the Dravidian parties hoping to capitalise on their well-known symbols and the sense of loyalty among their supporters to trump the BJP. Naam Tamilar Katchi's N Sureshkumar is another candidate in the fray. The most significant issues in the constituency range from agricultural to infrastructural as residents complained that good roads, clean drinking water and increasing drug use were going to be the things they would keep in mind while picking between the two leaves, rising sun and lotus symbols.

Climate change linked to rising stroke deaths: Global study reveals alarming trends
disability due to stroke around the world are increasingly linked to temperature changes driven by climate change, a new analysis of global data over three decades has found. In 2019, there were over 5.2 lakh stroke deaths linked to non-optimal temperatures, the study, published in the journal Neurology, found. While the majority of these stroke deaths — more than 4.7 lakh — were due to lower than optimal temperatures, researchers also found that number of deaths from stroke linked to higher than optimal temperatures had increased, when compared with 1990. They associated optimal temperatures with the lowest death rates. The burden of stroke «due to high temperature has increased rapidly, especially among people aged older than 10 years, and was disproportionately concentrated in low Socio-demographic Index (SDI) regions such as Africa,» they wrote in the study.

Knee-deep in smallcaps? It’s time you rebalanced your portfolio
Swarup Mohanty, Vice Chairman & CEO, Mirae Asset Global Investments, says “every fund manager will ask you to buy a good company at a good price. You have to decide how much of your portfolio is invested in good companies and the good companies are invariably the larger companies which have more from a balance sheet stability perspective. So, if you have bought more of the smaller companies, it is time to rebalance and that would be the right way of going ahead.” Good to see that despite the kind of volatility that we have seen in the stock markets, the SIP data continues unabated. What is your own expectation of what the next realistic target should be for the SIP figures on a monthly basis? Swarup Mohanty: It has become the go-to way of investing broadly for Indians. It is such a wonderful process of investing. It does allow investors to catch volatility like this and then over a period of time, the rupee cost averaging does set in. So, the process of investing through SIP is always the disciplined way and hence I think more and more Indians are catching on to it, 19,200 per month as we speak. My figure for December 2024 is 25,000. I do not see any stoppage of this at all. So, yes, I mean, great to be at the receiving end of the SIP flows.
