Government of India (GoI) will present the Interim Budget 2024-25 on 1st Feb’24 (Thursday). Although the Budget presentation is only one part of managing public finances, it attracts significant attention. Based on provisional data available for 8MFY23 (Apr-Nov’23), our calculations suggest that gross taxes can exceed budget estimates (BEs) for the third consecutive year, by as much as INR1.3t in FY24. Due to higher non-tax revenue receipts, such as dividends, coupled with higher devolution to states and an expected shortfall in divestments, there is a projected over-achievement of INR1.1t in total receipts in FY24. According to the first supplementary demands presented on 6th Dec’23, the GoI has sought to authorize an additional cash outgo of INR584b in FY24, largely because of higher subsidies and defense services.

Target Death President country Biden promises US 'shall respond' after troops killed in Jordan
drone attack on a base in Jordan killed three American troops and wounded more than 30 on Sunday, with President Joe Biden blaming Iran-backed militants and vowing to hold the perpetrators to account. It is the first time American military personnel have been killed by hostile fire in the Middle East since the war between Israel and Iran-backed Hamas began, and the incident will further raise tensions in the region and add to fears of a broader conflict directly involving Tehran. «While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,» Biden said in a statement, pledging to hold «all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing.» Later in the day at a South Carolina church banquet hall, the president held a moment of silence for the US troops killed in the attack, then said: «We shall respond.» Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri called the attack «a message to the American administration that unless the killing of innocent people in Gaza stops, it may be faced with the entire (Muslim) nation.» «The continuation of the American-Zionist aggression on Gaza risks a regional explosion,» Abu Zuhri said. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Sunday evening that the attack had hit a logistics support base located at Tower 22, in northeast Jordan, and that it wounded at least 34 service members, eight of whom required evacuation from the country. There are around 350 US Army and Air Force personnel at the base who conduct «a number of key support functions,» including for the international coalition against the Islamic State jihadist group, CENTCOM said. Jordan's government spokesman Muhannad Mubaidin,

To build this enormous nest egg, Nagarajan needs to put away nearly Rs.80,000 every month in avenues that earn her 10% annualised returns. However, the Chennai-based IT professional earns Rs.60,000 per month and spends nearly all of it. “If I start saving for retirement, I will have nothing left to spend,” she says. Many people dream of a care-free retirement, with lots of spare time and enough money in the bank. This dream may remain just that if you haven’t saved enough. The road to building an adequate nest egg is full of pitfalls. Topping the list is investing less than you need to. A 30-year-old, aiming at a retirement income of Rs.50,000 a month, will need to invest Rs.35,000 a month for 30 years to live comfortably till the age of 90. Invest less than this amount and your nest egg will be finished in no time (see graphic). “Under-funding of retirement corpus is a common problem. People don’t realise this until much later, when money starts running out,” says Abhishek Kumar, Founder & Chief Investment Adviser, SahajMoney. The mandatory monthly contribution to retirement plans, such as the Employees’ Provident Fund and the NPS, means that salaried people are putting away at least 12% of their income towards retirement. Add to this the tax-saving investments under Section 80C, which force many people to put away money in long-term investments.
