Who is Ebrahim Rasool? South African ambassador to the U.S who has been declared persona non grata and asked to leave the country by Donald Trump; here's the reason why
Trump administration escalated its rift with South Africa by declaring the country’s ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, persona non grata—a rare diplomatic rebuke typically reserved for lower-ranking officials. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Rasool of harboring anti-Trump sentiments, citing a webinar where the ambassador criticized Elon Musk’s ties to far-right European figures. Rubio’s announcement, made via social media during a flight from G7 meetings, left the State Department scrambling to clarify details, including whether Rasool was even in the U.S. at the time. Rasool, a veteran anti-apartheid activist and ally of Nelson Mandela, previously served as ambassador from 2010–2015 before returning in January. His expulsion follows Trump’s executive order slashing aid to South Africa, citing contested claims about land reforms targeting white Afrikaners. The move marks a dramatic downturn in relations, echoing Cold War-era diplomatic standoffs but breaking precedent by targeting an ambassador.

Third Eye: Secret plot or fiction? Clash amid loyalty shifts
Sanjay Raut recently alleged that Deputy CM Eknath Shinde held a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah, during which Shinde reportedly expressed grievances against Devendra Fadnavis. Despite the meeting allegedly having only two attendees, Saamana, the newspaper edited by Raut, published the purported conversation verbatim. Raut aimed to suggest that Shinde was scheming against Fadnavis. However, Fadnavis later dismissed Raut's claims, accusing the latter of trying to rival scriptwriters Salim and Javed in crafting fiction.

Jaffar train hijacking could deepen mistrust between China and Pakistan
Baloch Liberation Army's hijacking of the Jaffar Express could intensify the growing mistrust between China's policy circles and Pakistan's security apparatus, as Beijing remains increasingly concerned over its vast investments in Balochistan. Chinese officials continue to voice concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the region, despite Pakistan's deployment of the Special Security Division (SSD) — a 15,000-strong force dedicated to protecting Chinese personnel involved in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). However, there are deepening doubts within China about Pakistan's ability to ensure security in the volatile province. In 2017, China proposed establishing joint security ventures with private security firms to protect Chinese nationals in Pakistan.

Drug menace: Congress demands disbanding of SFI, targets Pinarayi Vijayan
Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday alleged that SFI is mainly responsible for the widespread drug distribution and consumption in colleges and hostels in Kerala and CM Vijayan is «encouraging» them. He also demanded the disbanding of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student organisation of ruling CPI(M). The Congress's sharp reaction came in the wake of police seizing two kilograms of ganja from the men's hostel of a Government Polytechnic College in Kalamassery in Kochi on Thursday night and arresting two students. CPI(M) strongly rejected the charges saying that there is an agenda to eliminate SFI. The incident triggered a blame game among student outfit leaders, including those from the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and the SFI, over the alleged involvement of their activists in the crime. The Congress leadership has been alleging that SFI leaders were involved in the ganja seizure case and the left outfit is playing a key role in the spread of drugs across campuses.

Tesla warns Trump administration of 'disproportionate impacts' of retaliatory tariffs
In a letter sent on Tuesday (11 March) to US trade representative Jamieson Greer, Tesla said it «appreciates» the chance to consult on trade arrangements but warned that «exporters are inherently exposed to disproportionate impacts when other countries respond to US trade actions». The letter, which was sent unsigned, added that some of the US' past trade actions have led to «immediate reactions by the targeted countries», including increased levies on electric vehicles (EVs) imported into those countries. Treasury Department releases numbers on how much money the US government took in and paid out the previous one. You can get them straight from the source, or in simplified form at the Hamilton Project’s Tracking Federal Expenditures in Real Time site. What they show so far is that, despite all the noise from Washington about layoffs and canceled programs and other cutbacks, the federal government has been spending money faster since President Trump took office on Jan.

China state firms curb Russian oil imports on sanctions risks, sources say
Russian oil supplies to top buyers India and China fell sharply following the January 10 sanctions by the former Biden administration targeting Russian producers Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz as well as insurers and more than 100 vessels to curtail Moscow's oil revenue. While Russian shipments to the two Asian countries have rebounded after more non-sanctioned tankers joined the trade, China's state-run Sinopec and Zhenhua Oil halted purchases of March-loading Russian oil due to concerns over dealing with the sanctioned firms, sources with knowledge of the matter said. The scaled-back buying by Chinese state players has weighed on Russian oil prices, eating into Moscow's revenue and putting additional pressure on Russia ahead of a possible ceasefire deal with Ukraine. A Beijing-based state oil source said his company ceased Russian oil deals as it undertakes more compliance checks and waits for a «clear picture» on a possible Russia-U.S. deal to end the Ukraine war.

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore won’t return before March 19
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore should have been back on Earth nine months ago. Instead, they’ve been orbiting the planet aboard the International Space Station (ISS), waiting for a ride home. What was supposed to be an eight-day mission in June 2024 turned into an extended stay due to critical technical failures with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Now, NASA has confirmed that they will not return before March 19, 2025. Their return hinges on the successful launch and docking of the SpaceX Crew-10 mission, which will bring four astronauts to the ISS to replace Williams and Wilmore. The mission has faced repeated delays, primarily due to poor weather conditions and a last-minute technical issue with the Falcon 9 rocket.

Retail inflation to come below RBI's 4.4% estimates in Jan-Mar quarter at 3.8%: Report
Consumer price index (CPI) or retail inflation is likely to undershoot the Reserve Bank's target in the January-March 2025 quarter, opening more policy space for easing the policy rate, Bank of Baroda said. India's retail inflation significantly improved in February 2025, as the year-on-year Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate stood at 3.61 percent, a decline of 65 basis points from the previous month. The retail inflation print fell below 4 per cent in February for the first time in six months, mainly due to a decline in vegetable prices. «We do not see major risks lurking for food inflation. However, one needs to be vigilant on account of hotter than expected summer, stickier international edible oil prices and risks from global inflationary policies,» said Dipanwita Mazumdar, an economist at Bank of Baroda. As of now, the tide is in favour of a lower headline print emanating from a better Rabi harvest, better supply management strategies of the government, rangebound commodity prices, benign energy price outlook and lesser dependence of the CPI basket in terms of imported commodities.

Indian FMCG companies struggling with a shortage of salesmen amid growing gig economy
Indian FMCG companies are grappling with a shortage of salesmen. Companies selling daily essentials are finding recruiting the famed ‘feet on the street’ difficult in the face of intimidating sales targets amid a slowdown and more attractive gig workforce opportunities, executives said. This comes at a time when companies are looking to hire incremental sales force and direct distribution roles to penetrate newer tier-2 and tier-3 markets and the hinterland in expectation of demand recovery in the new fiscal. “It is progressively getting harder to find salesmen across FMCG. These are hard jobs, you’ve to pound the pavement and get the sales, when eight months of the year it's extremely hot or the weather is harsh,” said Dinkar Ayilavarapu, head of Flipkart Wholesale, the B2B marketplace owned by the Flipkart Group.

Did he take a leaf out of Elon Musk's DOGE? Keir Starmer to slash 10,000 jobs at NHS England; here are the ones who will be impacted
Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed plans to slash 9,000 roles from the 15,000-strong NHS England workforce, targeting hundreds of millions in savings by merging duplicated functions like communications and strategy teams. The decision reverses a 2012 Coalition-era restructuring, drawing cautious support from figures like Jeremy Hunt, though critics warn of potential disruptions to patient care. Recent resignations of NHS England’s chief executive and medical director preceded the overhaul, signaling internal turmoil.

Holi cheer for now, hope for the best
Retail inflation fell to a 7-mth low of 3.6% in February, driven by falling vegetable prices, official data showed on Wednesday. But the pre-Holi gains are likely to be short-lived with heatwaves predicted in the country as early as March. Vegetables have been the main driver of inflation in the last 12 months, and the correction is set to reverse when winter stocks run down.
