Israel raids West Bank home of Hamas deputy leader
West Bank home of a senior Hamas leader and detained members of his family, witnesses said. Saleh al-Aruri is the deputy to Hamas' overall leader Ismail Haniyeh and one of the founders of the Islamist group's military wing. Based in Lebanon, he is a key target for Israel following the October 7 attacks when Hamas militants from Gaza stormed into southern Israel and killed at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and seized more than 200 hostages, according to Israeli officials. Since then, more than 4,300 Palestinians, mainly civilians, have been killed in relentless Israeli bombardments, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. Troops entered Aruri's home in Arura village, some 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Ramallah, at dawn on Saturday, arresting more than 20 people, including one of his brothers and nine of his nephews, mayor Ali al-Khasib and witnesses told AFP. Dozens more were pulled in for questioning. Outside the house, troops put up a banner of the Hamas deputy against the background of an Israeli flag that read: «This was the house of Saleh Aruri and has become the headquarters of Abu al-Nimer — Israeli intelligence», witnesses said, with images of it widely shared online. Village residents said Abu al-Nimer was an alias for the Israeli intelligence officer responsible for the area. In a statement, the army said the raid was jointly staged with the Shin Beth internal security service and resulted in the arrests of «dozens of Hamas members» among them relatives of Aruri.

Farmers key factor in Chhattisgarh polls, their support will help Congress win 75-plus seats: CM Baghel
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel called farmers a decisive factor in the upcoming assembly elections in the state, and said his government has implemented several schemes for their welfare and their support will help the ruling Congress achieve the target of winning 75-plus seats in the 90-member House. In an interview to PTI, Baghel also said his government tried to impose liquor prohibition, one of the key promises made by the Congress in the last assembly polls, but could not implement it as many people started turning to spurious alcohol with several of them dying due to its consumption. Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh will be held in two phases — on November 7 and 17.

Kotak Mahindra Bank among 3 buy-sell ideas from Rupak De
momentum indicator RSI displaying positive divergence, Kotak Mahindra Bank stock may be poised for a bullish move. «The stock has a visible support level at 1700, which is acting as a cushion for the bulls. This support level is crucial for maintaining the bullish sentiment. Given the strong buying, positive RSI divergence, and the support at Rs 1740, the stock has the potential to reach upside targets of Rs 1820 and Rs 1860,» said Rupak De, senior technical analyst at LKP Securities. Edited excerpts: The earnings season seems to be having a negative impact on both banks and IT stocks. In this situation, do you think Nifty may break below the support around 19,500-level?

Q2 results review: Major players report soft earnings; what's the road ahead for IT sector?
Wipro have reported subdued earnings for the July-September quarter (Q2) due to the impact of ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties, which have resulted in reduced discretionary spending in critical markets. The near-future prospects also seem unfavourable, as the US Federal Reserve is committed to reducing inflation to its 2 per cent target. To achieve this, the central bank is expected to maintain high-interest rates for an extended duration and may even implement further rate hikes, which could place additional pressure on the economy.

Why Israel's approach to Gaza could backfire
war against the barbaric Hamas, while trying to reach out to moderate Palestinians. Biden, I know, tried really hard to get Israeli leaders to pause in their rage and think three steps ahead — not only about how to get into the Gaza Strip to take down Hamas but also about how to get out — and how to do it with the fewest civilian casualties possible. While the president expressed deep understanding of Israel's moral and strategic dilemma, he pleaded with Israeli military and political leaders to learn from America's rush to war after 9/11, which took our troops deep into the dead ends and dark alleys of unfamiliar cities and towns in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, from everything I have gleaned from senior U.S. officials, Biden failed to get Israel to hold back and think through all the implications of an invasion of Gaza for Israel and the United States. So let me put this in as stark and clear language as I can, because the hour is late: I believe that if Israel rushes headlong into Gaza now to destroy Hamas — and does so without expressing a clear commitment to seek a two-state solution with the Palestinian Authority and end Jewish settlements deep in the West Bank — it will be making a grave mistake that will be devastating for Israeli interests and American interests. It could trigger a global conflagration and explode the entire pro-American alliance structure that the United States has built in the region since Henry Kissinger engineered the end of the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

'Sliver of hope' as Hamas releases hostages, but Gaza aid stalled
Israel pounded the densely-populated territory where millions waited for promised aid deliveries on Saturday. The Islamist group took more than 200 people hostage when it stormed into Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, and killed at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians who were shot, mutilated or burnt to death on the first day of the raid, according to Israeli officials. The fate of the hostages has been shrouded in uncertainty, so the release of mother and daughter Judith and Natalie Raanan offered a rare «sliver of hope», said Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross. US President Joe Biden said he was «overjoyed» by the release, which comes days after he visited Israel to express solidarity with the wounded country and press for humanitarian aid into Gaza. Trucks carrying relief are still stuck on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing into Gaza, though Biden said they could cross in the «next 24 to 48 hours.» Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas, and says around 1,500 of the group's fighters were killed in clashes before its army regained control of the area under attack on October 7. Biden said Friday he believes the attack was motivated partly by Saudi Arabia's plan to recognise Israel. Israel's military campaign has levelled entire city blocks in Gaza, killing 4,137 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Israeli troops are massed on the border with Gaza ahead of an expected ground invasion that officials have pledged will begin «soon». But a full-blown land offensive carries many risks, including to the hostages from Israel and around the world held by Hamas.

Gaza war death toll rises to 4,137: Hamas health ministry
Gaza Strip since Israel began bombarding the Palestinian enclave, the Hamas-controlled health ministry said Friday. The ministry said another 13,162 people have been wounded in the Israeli strikes, which have been ongoing since October 7. Among those killed were 16 people who died at the compound of Greek Orthodox church of Saint Porphyrius in Gaza City late on Thursday, the ministry said. Around 500 people had taken refuge at the church, including five members of Caritas staff, along with their families, NGO Cartias Internationalis said in a statement. «We were devastated to learn of the death of our colleague Viola, 26-year-old, who was killed alongside her husband and their infant daughter» in the strike, the NGO said in a statement. It said at least 17 people were killed and others are still under the rubble. Witnesses told AFP the strike appeared to have been aimed at a target close to the place of worship where many Gaza residents had taken refuge as the war raged in the Palestinian enclave. The army said its fighter jets had struck a «command and control centre» belonging to Hamas that was involved in firing rockets towards Israel. «As a result of the strike a wall of a church in the area was damaged. The Hamas health ministry also said that since the conflict erupted, 46 medical personnel had been killed and another 85 wounded in the enclave. Twenty-one health facilities were out of service due to lack of fuel, it added. Palestinians in Gaza are still waiting for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from Egypt through the Rafah crossing. The war in Gaza began after Hamas carried out a deadly raid on southern Israel on October 7 that left more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, killed on Israeli soil.
