Google apologises to India over Gemini's results on Modi, calls its own AI platform 'unreliable'
Gemini caused a major controversy, Google has said sorry to the Indian Prime Minister and called its platform 'unreliable', ToI reported on February 4 quoting minister of state for IT & Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Chandrasekhar told the newspaper that the govt had sent Google a notice seeking an explanation on «unsubstantiated» results returned by Gemini in response to a particular query on PM Modi. Google replied and said, «Sorry, the platform is unreliable,» the minister added. The government has announced that AI platforms will now require a permit to operate in India. India should not be used as a testing ground for AI platforms, especially considering the criticism they have faced worldwide for providing unsubstantiated, biased, misinformed, or unverified results, it said.

India's microchip leap: The tough part lies ahead
₹1.5 trillion providing the building blocks for the critical semiconductor value chain of design, fabrication, assembly, testing, marking and packaging. Key among these proposals is the partnership between Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation for a ₹91,000-crore fabrication plant with a capacity of 50,000 wafer starts per month. This chip capacity will grant traction at last to India’s long-standing quest for self-sufficiency in semiconductors, or near freedom from reliance on overseas suppliers.

Govt missive to seek nod to deploy LLMs to hurt small companies: startups
AI) and large language models (LLMs) must seek «explicit permission of the government» before being deployed for users on the Indian internet, has sent shock waves among companies developing LLMs, especially startups who feel it is «anti-innovation and not forward-looking». Several companies building LLMs, venture capitalists as well as experts told ET such directions can kill startups trying to build in this «hyper-active» space in which India is already late to the party. It will only allow big corporations who can afford additional resources for testing, and government approval, they argued.

Growth-hacking hard as it needs cross-functional coordination: Sean Ellis
Sean Ellis is famed for coining the phrase “growth hacking” back in 2010 to showcase how technology upstarts rapidly grow their customer base. Ellis’s book ‘Hacking Growth’, co-authored by Morgan Brown, is a playbook for companies pushing for sustainable growth, derived from his experience of working at startups like Dropbox, Eventbrite, Lookout in their early stages. ET sat down with Ellis on the sidelines of Bangalore Growth Fest hosted by marketing services firm IncrementumX to discuss his plans in India, the growth-at-all-cost mindset among startups, and tech valuations. Edited excerpts. How did you come up with the phrase growth hacking? Back in 2010, I wrote a blog post where I recommended hiring a growth hacker for startups. Somebody needs to be focused on getting people in the door to have experiences with the product and build a brand. In a startup, you don't have that luxury, so trying to scrutinise every single activity you do, every single dollar you spend can impact your ability to acquire and retain customers. Then Andrew Chen (general partner and venture capital fund Andreessen Horowitz) wrote a blog post around six months later… where he said growth hacker is the new VP of marketing. That’s when it took off.

Prostate cancer unveiled: AI uncovers new subtypes, paves way for tailored treatments
artificial intelligence (AI) to reveal a new form of aggressive prostate cancer which they said could help thousands of lives by revolutionising how the disease is diagnosed and treated in the future. The study, published in the journal Cell Genomics, reveals that prostate cancer, which affects one in eight men in their lifetime, includes two different subtypes termed evotypes. The findings, led by researchers at the University of Oxford, and the University of Manchester, UK, could help provide tailored treatments to each individual patient according to a genetic test which will also be delivered using AI, they said. «Our research demonstrates that prostate tumours evolve along multiple pathways, leading to two distinct disease types,» said lead researcher Dan Woodcock, from the University of Oxford.

ISRO ICRB exam syllabus, eligibility, and tips: Here's how to become a scientist in Indian space organisation
ICRB exam is a highly competitive examination conducted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to select scientists and engineers for various positions. In order to prepare for this exam, it is imperative to have a thorough understanding of the exam pattern and syllabus. Here is an overview of the exam: The ICRB exam is conducted annually and consists of two stages: a written exam and an interview. The written exam is divided into two parts: Part A and Part B. Part A comprises multiple-choice questions (MCQs) on technical knowledge, general awareness, and reasoning ability. On the other hand, Part B is a descriptive paper where candidates are required to write short essays on topics related to their field of expertise. Candidates who clear the written exam are then shortlisted for the interview round. The interview assesses the candidate's technical knowledge, communication skills, and suitability for the applied position. The syllabus for the ICRB exam may vary depending on the position applied for, but generally includes topics such as engineering mathematics, computer science, electronics, and mechanical engineering. Candidates are advised to refer to the official ISRO website for a detailed syllabus and exam pattern.
