New Delhi: Pharmaceutical companies may have to switch to transparent bottles for eye drops so that consumers can ascertain the clarity of eye drops before using them, said people aware of the matter. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has called a meeting with pharma lobby groups on Monday to discuss the matter as the regulatory authority proposes to make amendments to the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 with respect to the packaging of eye drops, they said. The Drugs Consultative Committee (DCC), a technical body of experts, had deliberated on the issue in its meeting last year after it received representation to amend the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 with respect to concerns raised on the packing of eye drops in opaque plastic vials or bottles by pharmaceutical companies on the basis of historical testing results of eye drops sampling. The tests showed that most of the samples failed in the description due to particulate matter and contamination.

The tests were carried out on Wednesday and Thursday. «The DRDO conducted two successful flight tests of Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles on February 28 and 29 from a ground-based portable launcher off the coast of Odisha from integrated test range, Chandipur,» the defence ministry said. It said the tests were carried out against high-speed unmanned aerial targets under different interception scenarios. «During all the test flights, the targets were intercepted and destroyed by the missiles, meeting the mission objectives,» the ministry said.

Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, arrested in a money laundering case, but permitted him to undergo cancer treatment at a hospital of his choice for two months. Goyal (74), who is lodged in Arthur Road jail in central Mumbai, had sought to be released on interim bail to undergo treatment for cancer. Special judge for cases under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) M G Deshpande permitted Goyal to undergo treatment for the illness at Tata hospital or any other hospital of his choice for a period of two months. Last month, Goyal was permitted by the court to undergo tests at a private hospital here. On February 15, Goyal filed an application seeking interim bail on medical grounds as the tests revealed malignancy. The application said Goyal has to undergo some scans to determine the stage of the malignancy, based on which doctors will be able to determine the line of treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy. The doctors have advised an aggressive and immediate line of treatment to arrest any fatal issues that could arise in the applicant's case, the plea added.

DGCA has mandated that at least 25 per cent of the air traffic controllers, aircraft maintenance engineers, and personnel carrying out safety-sensitive work at an airport will have to undergo a breath analyser test daily. The revised Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) in this regard will come into force after three months, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in a release on Thursday. Currently, the breath analyser test percentage required is 10 per cent and that has been increased to 25 per cent. It will be applicable for air traffic controllers, ground staff, aircraft maintenance engineers, and ground handling services personnel right.
