ICC Rankings: Nabi ends Shakib's long reign as top ODI all-rounder, Bumrah maintains pole position
Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammed Nabi on Wednesday became the oldest player to headline the ICC ODI all-rounders' list, ending Shakib Al Hasan's long reign at the top. There is little to no change at the top of the Test rankings with India's Jasprit Bumrah firmly perched at the top of the bowlers' list. India's Ravindra Jadeja, who is set to return in the third Test against England beginning Thursday, still led the way comprehensively in Test all-rounders' rankings. Nabi reached the No.1 spot following his 136 during the opening match of Afghanistan's three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, while the 39-year-old also picked up a wicket in the same contest to gain one place and move to seventh on the latest rankings for ODI bowlers.

We need to focus more on the social effects of AI, says Nicholas Christakis
just-published experiments led by Hirokazu Shirado at Carnegie Mellon University, we found that even very simple forms of AI assistance for drivers, such as auto-steering or auto-braking, eroded social norms of reciprocity on the road. Allowing humans to delegate whether to swerve away from an oncoming car in repeated games of chicken resulted in people subsequently being less likely to take turns in giving way, thereby increasing the frequency of crashes when they drove without AI assistance. These effects of AI suggest that it could have a big impact on the social norms that have evolved over millennia, shaping how we treat each other in all manner of everyday interactions.

South Korea says North Korea has fired cruise missiles, adding to provocative run in weapons tests
North Korea on Wednesday fired multiple cruise missiles into the sea in its fifth test of such weapons since January, South Korea's military said, extending a streak in weapons demonstrations that's elevating tensions in the region. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the South Korean and U.S. militaries were analyzing the launches that were detected in waters northeast of the eastern coastal city of Wonsan. The South Korean military didn't immediately provide the exact numbers of missiles fired or how far they flew. It wasn't immediately clear either whether the missiles were fired from land or from sea assets. «Our military has increased surveillance and vigilance and is working closely with our US partners and is closely monitoring signs for further activity from North Korea,» the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. Experts say North Korea is ramping up pressure on its rivals in an election year in South Korea and the United States with a long-term focus of forcing Washington to accept the idea of the North as a nuclear power and extract security and economic concessions from a position of strength.

U.S. Foreign Aid Package Faces Crucial Test in GOP-led House
Quiver Quantitative — The Democratic-controlled Senate's recent passage of a $95.3 billion aid package, heavily backed by President Biden, represents a significant moment in the United States' foreign policy landscape. This comprehensive package, earmarking substantial funds for key allies including Israel and Taiwan, showcases a concerted effort to assert a robust American presence on the global stage. However, as this legislative victory unfolds, it encounters a complex web of political challenges, particularly with the bill's forthcoming battle in the GOP-dominated House. Speaker Mike Johnson's call for modifications, potentially reviving border security debates, underscores the intricate balance between international support and domestic policy priorities.
