Is Russia planning to detonate a nuclear bomb in space? Here is everything you need to know
nuclear weapons have been well documented by the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings. What happens when nuclear weapons orbit the earth from space? This question has assumed importance since Russia launched the Cosmos 2553 satellite in 2022, just before its invasion of Ukraine. Presently, no one with the exception of Russia knows what exactly this satellite does. A member of the US Congress recently highlighted a pressing national concern. Many took this as a warning regarding the Cosmos 2553. The consequences are terrible and the US has been working towards the adaption of a resolution in the UNSC against the weaponization of space.

Dollar adrift ahead of US inflation test; sterling firms
dollar fell a touch on Thursday although moves were largely subdued ahead of a U.S. inflation report due later in the day, while sterling firmed on receding expectations for an August rate cut from the Bank of England (BoE). The British pound rose to a one-month high of $1.28545 in early Asia trade, extending a 0.48% gain from the previous session after comments from BoE policymakers caused markets to scale back bets for an easing cycle to begin next month.

Rohit Sharma to lead India in ODI and Test formats, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirms
T20 World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India in the ODI and Test formats BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on Sunday, exuding confidence that the country will win next year's Champions Trophy and World Test Championship under his captaincy. The 37-year-old Rohit, who became the third Indian captain after legendary Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to win a global trophy, has announced his retirement from the T20 format. «The next stage is the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I have full faith in Rohit Sharma's captaincy, that we will be the champions in both these tournaments,» secretary Shah said in a video message. The Champions Trophy, scheduled in Pakistan next year, will be held after eight years (since 2017 in UK), and even though the draft schedule has been submitted to the ICC, the BCCI hasn't yet given its green light to it.

The embattled Biden campaign tests Kamala Harris' strength vs. Trump
Joe Biden's campaign is quietly testing the strength of Vice President Kamala Harris against former President Donald Trump in a head-to-head survey of voters, as Biden fights for his political future with a high-stakes news conference Thursday. The survey, which is being conducted this week and was commissioned by the Biden campaign's analytics team, is believed to be the first time since the debate that Biden's aides have sought to measure how the vice president would fare at the top of the ticket. It was described by three people who are informed about it and insisted on anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information. They did not specify why the survey was being conducted or what the campaign planned to do with the results. It could be read as the team gathering information to present a case to the president that his path forward is slim, or to argue that Biden is still the strongest standard-bearer for his party. The effort comes as some longtime aides and advisers to Biden are said to have become increasingly convinced that he will have to step aside from the campaign, and in recent days have been trying to come up with ways to convince him that he should, The New York Times reported Thursday. A growing number of prominent lawmakers have called for Biden to drop out or suggest he should reconsider his plans to run.

View: Indian banks know climate is their biggest threat
Reserve Bank of India reviews the stability of the country’s financial system. Its latest report made for good headlines: The proportion of loans that have gone sour is at a multiyear low, and likely to decline further. But buried in the report is a warning from the very institutions the central bank is charged with regulating. Market participants responded to a survey asking what they saw as the biggest contributors to systemic risk. While they downplayed the usual concerns — asset quality, interest rate risk, capital outflows — one particular threat loomed larger than ever before: climate change. In fact, respondents named it for the first time as the greatest source of systemic risk to the Indian financial system. They’re not wrong to worry. It isn’t just that India, according to the Network for Greening the Financial System, will see sharply lower growth unless temperature rises are controlled. That growth will be more variable and subject to sharper shocks, including those from weird weather and delayed monsoons. This worries the country’s financial arteries; so does the uncertain fate of sectors such as construction, cement and energy, to which they are deeply exposed.

Ravi Shastri wants fewer test teams, MCC chief backs T20 in changing landscape
test cricket to six or seven teams and using the 20-overs format as the vehicle to spread the game were some of the views aired at a symposium organised by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Sunday. Test cricket's dwindling appeal outside India, England and Australia has coincided with the proliferation of lucrative T20 leagues across the world. Although test cricket at the top level still often produces drama, the brevity and action-packed nature of 20-overs cricket has quickly made it the preferred format for the game's new fans.

Commodity Talk: Gold's 13% H1CY2024 returns robust, but positives priced-in now, says Anuj Gupta
Most bullish factors are priced in bullion now and we believe that after registering strong gains in the last three months, bullion prices are likely to witness a correction in the short term, Anuj Gupta, Head Commodity & Currency at HDFC Securities said. In the long term, he remains bullish expecting this precious metal to test Rs 78,000-Rs 80,000 levels by the end of the year. Edited excerpts: Gold has given 13% returns in H1CY2024 amid ups and downs. How will you rate its performance during this period against your expectations? Gold's rally has been more than what Nifty has delivered till date. The gains have been on account of bullish buying by major Central Banks across the world. Moreover, geopolitical tension and fear of slow down in Europe and the US also played their part. All these factors have been positive for gold being a safe haven for investors. On the flip sided equities and Nifty have suffered as a consequence of this.
