Facebook Target Platform Fighting TikTok Instagram Meta fights sprawling Chinese 'Spamouflage' operation
Meta on Tuesday said it purged thousands of Facebook accounts that were part of a widespread online Chinese spam operation trying to covertly boost China and criticize the West. The campaign, which became known as «Spamouflage», was active across more than 50 platforms and forums including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X, formerly known as Twitter, according to a Meta threat report. «We assess that it's the largest, though unsuccessful, and most prolific covert influence operation that we know of in the world today,» said Meta Global Threat Intelligence Lead Ben Nimmo. «And we've been able to link Spamouflage to individuals associated with Chinese law enforcement.» More that 7,700 Facebook accounts along with 15 Instagram accounts were jettisoned in what Meta described as the biggest ever single takedown action at the tech giant's platforms. «For the first time we've been able to tie these many clusters together to confirm that they all go to one operation,» Nimmo said. The network typically posted praise for China and its Xinjiang province and criticisms of the United States, Western foreign policies, and critics of the Chinese government including journalists and researchers, the Meta report says. The operation originated in China and its targets included Taiwan, the United States, Australia, Britain, Japan, and global Chinese-speaking audiences. Facebook or Instagram accounts or pages identified as part of the «large and prolific covert influence operation» were taken down for violating Meta rules against coordinated deceptive behavior on its platforms. Meta's team said the network seemed to garner scant engagement, with viewer comments tending to point out bogus claims. Clusters of fake accounts were run

UPS CEO Platform Oracle ByteDance TikTok TikTok's US future still in limbo as commerce secretary visits China
Gina Raimondo's visit to China is putting a spotlight on the future of TikTok in the United States, where criticism of the app and its ties to Beijing reached a fever pitch this year. Despite the intense pressure on the popular short-form video app, which is owned by Chinese technology company ByteDance, efforts to ban or regulate it in Washington have not borne fruit. And even with all that scrutiny, Raimondo is not planning to discuss TikTok while in China, a glaring omission that reflects the impasse at which it has left the Biden administration. The administration has been stymied by how to deal with TikTok even as intelligence officials have warned that it poses a national security threat.

TikTok performer audience social concert song dance Adele halts Las Vegas concert, helps out fan. Here's what happened
Adele halted her performance during her Las Vegas concert on Saturday to intervene on behalf of a fan who was being confronted by security personnel. Videos of the incident have now gone viral on social media. The incident occurred as Adele was singing "Water Under the Bridge" at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace, where she maintains a residency. While performing, she noticed security addressing a fan in the audience. In a video posted by the TikTok account @adeleslittleloveee, the fan in question can be observed rising to their feet to sing and dance along to the song. A female security guard approaches the fan and engages in conversation, followed by a male security guard who requests the fan to sit back down. The fan calmly responds, stating, «I'll stay calm.» Adele paused the music and directly addressed the security guard through the microphone, as captured in the footage. Additionally, in a separate video initially posted on Instagram and subsequently shared on other platforms, Adele can be seen gesturing towards the incident. This instance isn't the first time Adele has interrupted her performance to address security matters. In 2017, during a show in Melbourne, Australia, she reprimanded a security guard for instructing fans to remain seated and refrain from dancing, according to the Evening Standard. Adele has also been noted for suspending her concerts to provide medical aid to unwell attendees.

UPS Citi Amazon Platform TikTok TikTok plans to ban links to e-commerce websites such as Amazon: Report
TikTok is reportedly planning to ban links to outside e-commerce websites such as Amazon, as it ramps up its shopping platform in the US. The move is seen as a way for the company to force people to use TikTok Shop if they want to purchase an item that they see on the app, reports 'The Information'. According to the report, TikTok Shop is on track to lose more than $500 million in the US this year. «TikTok Shop, the app's nascent shopping service, is expected to lose more than $500 million in the US this year,» said the report, citing sources. The loss reflects TikTok's heavy investment in hiring, building a delivery network and «subsidising merchants that offer double-digit-percentage discounts and free shipping,» the report added. Consumers in the US are spending around $3-$4 million a day on TikTok Shop. The company expects this figure to exceed $10 million by the end of the year. TikTok, the short video platform owned by ByteDance, launched online shopping service TikTok Shop in 2021, starting in Indonesia.

Twitter Digital Microsoft Platform TikTok Meta Platforms performer EU's Breton urges Big Tech to use new online content rules to restore trust
Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Twitter, TikTok and other tech giants should use EU online content rules that apply to them this Friday to restore trust and safety in their platforms, EU industry chief Thierry Breton said on Wednesday. The rules known as the Digital Services Act (DSA) require the companies to perform risk management, conduct external and independent auditing, share data with authorities and researchers and adopt a code of conduct. Obligations for the companies, which also include booking.com, Pinterest, Snap Inc's Snapchat, Wikipedia, Zalando and Alibaba's AliExpress are more onerous than others because they have more than 45 million users. These very large online platforms and very large online search engines have until Friday to provide their first annual risk assessment to the European Commission. «Complying with the DSA is not a punishment — it is an opportunity for these online platforms to reinforce their brand value and reputation as a trustworthy site,» Breton said in a statement. «Child protection will be an enforcement priority, as will be fighting disinformation, including pro-Russian propaganda, in particular as we are entering a period of elections in Europe,» he said. The DSA also forces the companies to be more transparent on their algorithmic processes, bots and targeted advertisements that amplify content and do more to tackle illegal, unsafe or counterfeit products sold on their platforms. Breton, who can hand out fines up to 6% of a company's global turnover for violations, said he would not hesitate to act. «My services and I will thoroughly enforce the DSA, and fully use our new powers to investigate and sanction platforms where warranted,» he said.

On the other hand, Ramaswamy has risen to the second spot from a mere 2 per cent then. Pollsters also found somewhat more “shaky support” among DeSantis supporters than among those for Ramaswamy. Almost half of Ramaswamy backers said they will definitely vote for him, while only a third of DeSantis supporters said the same, according to The Hill. Meanwhile, more than 80 per cent of Trump supporters said they will definitely vote for the former president.
