asteroid named 2024 RW1 burned up in Earth's atmosphere over the Philippines on Wednesday, shortly after being discovered by astronomers in Arizona. The celestial event produced a green fireball followed by an orange tail, captivating skywatchers and igniting interest across the globe. NASA confirmed that early Wednesday afternoon, the one-meter-sized asteroid broke apart in the atmosphere over Luzon Island. Astronomers in Arizona discovered the asteroid only a few hours before it entered Earth's atmosphere. Dramatic footage of the incident was shared online, showing a bright green fireball lighting up the sky and creating a stunning visual spectacle. The European Space Agency noted that 2024 RW1 is just the ninth asteroid ever to be detected before impact, showcasing advancements in the ability to foresee near-Earth objects. “There was a brilliant flare in the sky as the asteroid burnt up over the Philippine shore,” said NASA. The quick detection and subsequent observation underscore the increasing capacity of astronomers to identify and track near-Earth objects, which is crucial for planetary defense.

New Fund Offer (NFO) is the initial subscription period when a mutual fund is launched. During this time, investors can purchase units of the mutual fund at a set price, usually Rs 10 per unit. NFOs are a way for asset management companies (AMCs) to raise capital for investing in the market based on the specific strategy or theme of the fund. Once the NFO period ends, the mutual fund units can be purchased at the prevailing Net Asset Value (NAV) in the open market. New fund offers (NFO) in mutual funds is similar to initial public offering (IPO) where a company before launching its share on the stock exchange offers the shares to the investors for subscription. In a similar manner, before launching the fund officially in the market the mutual fund houses offer the units so that investors are able to make an investment in that particular fund. NFOs can be of different types, such as equity funds, debt funds, hybrid funds, or thematic funds, and may come with unique features or investment themes that differentiate them from existing funds. For investors, NFOs provide an opportunity to enter a fund at its inception and potentially benefit from its growth over time.

Index-tracking stock funds with $350 billion in assets are due for a big revamp later this month, after S&P Dow Jones Indices retooled its rules to curb the dominance of the largest companies. With the equity market getting increasingly top-heavy in the era of Big Tech, S&P will now reduce the weightings of the market leaders in proportion to their capitalization — in the event they get even bigger and breach size-related thresholds in key industry benchmarks, it said in a statement this week.

Sun Pharma and Israel-based Moebius Medical on Friday said that USFDA has granted fast track designation to novel non-opioid therapy MM-II against osteoarthritis knee pain. USFDA fast track designation allows expedited review of potential therapies to treat serious conditions and fill an unmet medical need. Among other benefits, companies whose investigational products are granted FTD are eligible for more frequent interactions with the USFDA during clinical development and potentially accelerated approval and priority review. MM2 is currently in planning stages for phase 3 clinical trials. Data from a randomized, controlled, Phase 2b study showed that a single intra-articular injection of 3mL of MM-II provided greater pain relief than placebo for up to 26 weeks.
