Savoury sweetness: Experiencing the seasonal joys of jaggery
Sugarcane features prominently in Pongal and other Indian festivals at the start of the year. My early memories of Pongal in Chennai are mostly about waiting for the two tall stalks my grandmother tied outside the front door to be chopped up, so we could chew it for the juice.

Vikas Khemani explains why big money can be made in pharma
Vikas Khemani, Founder, Carnelian Capital Advisors, says: “We do not buy pharma because it is a defensive. We bought pharma because it is growing. Pharma was not going anywhere in the last seven, eight years, except for the last one year or so. We think that the seven-year cycle is over. We are beginning to see a very interesting trend developing in the segment, both from a US market perspective, as well as the domestic market perspective. We think the underperformance of seven, eight years will catch up. We think that is where big money can be made.” Surprised by what TCS and Infosys have managed to do, just so beaten down in terms of sentiment and even an inline set of numbers or a slight beat is what the Street gets impressed with? Vikas Khemani: I mean, you know that I mean, we have been quite positive on the IT sector for quite some time.

Over 50 smallcap stocks rise 10-40% as Sensex hits lifetime high driven by IT shares; do you own?
BSE Sensex hit its fresh all-time high of 72,720.96 in the previous session and achieved weekly gain of 0.8 per cent, driven by a sharp rally of information technology (IT) stocks over robust quarterly results. A strengthening rupee and hectic buying on tech, realty and oil counters amid a mixed trend in global markets further bolstered sentiment, according to traders. On the stock-specific front, Wardwizard Innovations, Network18 Media, Suven Life Sciences, Easy Trip Planners, DB Realty, MRPL, Trident, Olectra Greentech, Dish TV, Suzlon Energy, Thomas Cook India, Man Industries, Karnataka Bank, PNB Gilts, and others are among the smallcaps that logged a double-digit rise in their share prices last week.

India has no plans to import wheat for now: Piyush Goyal
trade minister said on Saturday. «Ground reports indicate that the crop is quite good and this year's production is expected at a record 114 million metric tons,» Piyush Goyal told reporters. India banned wheat exports in 2022 after output was curtailed due to a heat wave, but more recently overseas sales picked up as Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent global prices to multi-year highs. The government has sold around 6 million metric tons of wheat to local bulk buyers since June. 1, when the state-run Food Corporation of India started selling the grain from its warehouses. Despite selling wheat from its granaries, inventories at state warehouses are likely to remain above the target of 7.46 million metric tons fixed for April 1, when a new marketing year starts, a top government official said earlier this month. The country's wheat stocks at state warehouses stood at 16.47 million metric tons as of Jan.

India asks US to make domestic H-1B visa renewals permanent, ease visas for traders & investors
India has also flagged its concerns about problems being faced by domestic businesses in getting timely visas for the US and has urged America to fast track the process, an official statement said on Saturday. These concerns were raised during the 14th India-US Trade Policy Forum held in New Delhi on Friday. It was co-chaired by the US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. “For H1B renewal visas, stamping has begun in the US on a pilot basis and we have asked them to make it permanent and for family members also,” an official told ET, adding that by April, tourist and business visa times to the US are expected to get normalised. The commerce ministry said that the two ministers noted that the movement of professional and skilled workers, students, investors and business visitors between the countries contributes immensely to enhancing bilateral economic and technological partnership.

"World does not give things easily, sometimes...": EAM Jaishankar on India's permanent UNSC membership
global support for India's permanent membership at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that sometimes things are not given generously and one has to seize it. «With each passing year, the feeling in the world is that India should be there, and I can feel that support...The world does not give things easily and generously; sometimes you have to take them,» the EAM said on a question regarding a permanent seat for India at the UNSC. The EAM was speaking at 'Manthan': Townhall meeting in Maharashtra's Nagpur. Jaishankar then pointed that India which has showed the capability of conducting a successful G20 presidency, that brought out " New Delhi Declaration" despite of diferences within the member nations, will contribute in the UNSC. «If a country has such a capability, such a country in the UNSC can actually contribute as well,» he added. On the relevance of the UN, the EAM said that in many ways, the limitations of the UN are now showing and that the organisation used to be more relevant in the 1950s-60s. United Nations (UN) is getting more and more ineffective in confronting key issues, he said, «The UN used to be more relevant in the 1950s-60s, but as the number of country's grew, it was easier for the permanent members to dominate the smaller countries.
