From corner office to mountain summit: Corporate chieftains turn to adventure travel to test and reset
Suresh Narayanan, chairman and managing director of Nestle India. When the 64-year-old is not looking at volume growth and operating margins, the uptick of Maggi and the prices of cocoa, he sets his sights on rocky trails and mountain peaks. An avid trekker and mountaineer, he went on a weeklong arduous trek with a band of friends to Tosamaidan, at a height of 13,000 ft, in Kashmir, a couple of months ago. It is not just Narayanan. A growing tribe of corporate chieftains, in their 50s and 60s, take a break from their corner office for the arduous outdoors. They swap one set of challenges for another as they travel to tough terrains. Some climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Machu Picchu in Peru. Others make their way to the Everest base camp or Kang Yatse in Ladakh. Nearer home, Uttarakhand, Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are their playgrounds. These executives dare themselves at every stage. The discipline required to push through challenging conditions is something they often bring back to the boardroom.

Flying, walking, watching: Track the anthropologist's (carbon) footprint
The shortest flight I ever took was from Tongatapu, capital of Tonga, to 'Eua, an island some 40 km farther away. On paper, the ferry takes 1.5 hrs. But its schedule is unreliable, the sea unruly, locals advise against it, and the black diesel smoke enough to make one nauseous. The longest flight we were on took us from Qatar to New Zealand, though fortunately, this was in a luxurious Qatar Airways Qsuite. Flying business class does account for three times more CO2 than roughing it in economy though.

'We are all going to hell': California man arrested for chaos in Frontier Airlines flight, faces 20 years jail time
California has been arrested for causing a disturbance on a Frontier Airlines flight bound for San Francisco. Charles Angel Salva, aged 30, may face up to 20 years in federal prison. He assaulted the crew and threatened to kill everyone onboard. This incident reportedly occurred earlier this month. Federal prosecutors revealed that Salva tampered with the oxygen masks in the overhead compartments. A witness mentioned that Salva seemed out of breath and wanted to get off the plane. When he pulled down the oxygen masks, his hand got stuck, and a fellow passenger helped him. Salva then verbally abused a flight attendant, saying, «This airplane is going down, we are all going to hell.» Panic erupted when Salva grabbed a fellow passenger and ran to the back of the plane. He tried to choke a flight attendant, leaving marks on her neck, and threatened to kill everyone on the flight.

Howard Levitt: Air Canada pilots strike cries out for federal intervention, but politics might get in the way
With Air Canada pilots poised to strike, the NDP has abrogated its supply and confidence agreement with the Liberals and announced that it will not support back-to-work legislation. With the Conservatives making a play for organized labour and anxious to trigger an election, it is unclear how far they will go this time, assuming Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, fearful of the political winds and increasingly desperate to avoid the electorate, decides to have the minister of labour order them back to work as they did with the railway workers.

Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky? The origins of the day and the superstitions behind it
paraskavedekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia. Reports suggest that the fear of Friday the 13th results in businesses losing an estimated $900 million every time it occurs because people avoid traveling, scheduling important events, or even going to work. The roots of this fear are not entirely clear. In Western culture, the number 13 is often seen as unlucky, contrasting with the number 12, which symbolizes completeness with examples like the 12 months of the year and the 12 zodiac signs. According to HISTORY, one myth traces the fear to an early version of the Code of Hammurabi, which supposedly omitted the 13th law. However, this was later found to be an error by a translator. Biblical tradition also plays a role. There were 13 guests at the Last Supper, and Jesus was crucified the next day, which was a Friday. Charles Panati, in his book «Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things,» links the superstition to Norse mythology. In one story, Loki, the god of mischief, crashed a banquet, causing chaos and resulting in the death of Balder, the god of light.

China’s recovery likely dealt another blow from extreme weather
extreme weather this summer. As pressure builds on policymakers to roll out more stimulus, data due Saturday will show growth in industrial production slipped in August for a fourth straight month, in what would be its longest deceleration in almost three years. A slower expansion in activity also extended to retail sales and investment, according to analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. The widespread weakness would be a signal of how little traction the $17 trillion economy has generated in recovering from its worst stretch in five quarters. Heat waves — coupled with torrential rains that snarled travel and flooded farmland and mines — have added to setbacks for Beijing and its pursuit of growth around 5%, a goal most global banks now believe might be out of reach.
