PM Modi unveils projects worth Rs 55,600 crore in Northeast, including strategic Sela tunnel
Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled projects worth Rs 55,600 crore in the Northeast, including the strategic Sela tunnel which will provide all-weather connectivity to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. The PM unveiled the projects spread across Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh at a programme in Itanagar. The Sela tunnel, constructed at a cost of about Rs 825 crore, is an engineering marvel. It will provide all-weather connectivity to Tawang across Sela pass on the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang Road in Arunachal Pradesh, a statement said. The project, the foundation stone of which was laid by PM Modi in February 2019, will not only provide a faster and more efficient transport route in the region but is of strategic importance to the country as it is located near the frontier with China.

Classes Internationales: Your exclusive path to higher education in France
During his state visit to India in January 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron made a significant announcement regarding the launch of Classes Internationales, a ground-breaking program for Indian students seeking higher education in France. The initiative, detailed in a joint statement signed by President Macron and Prime Minister Modi on 26th January 2024, aims to facilitate Indian students' immersion in the French language and academic methodology at prestigious French universities before embarking on their chosen academic degree path. It reaffirms France's commitment to widening opportunities for Indian students and joins other major developments such as the introduction of the 5-year short-stay Schengen visa for Indian graduates, India's emergence as the largest recipient of academic scholarships from the French government, the signing of the MoU on the mutual recognition of academic diplomas between France and India in 2018, and the setting of a target to welcome 30,000 Indian students to France by 2030.

Trafficking gang bust: 2 Russia-based agents under CBI scanner for sending Indians to Ukraine war
Russia-based agents involved in the human trafficking network that pushed Indians into the Ukraine war zone are under the CBI scanner, officials said on Friday. The agents allegedly confiscated the passports of Indians arriving in Russia and forced them to fight with the armed forces, officials said. The network was busted by the CBI on Thursday. Christina and Moinuddin Chippa, a resident of Rajasthan, are based in Russia and were facilitating the trafficking of Indian youth to Russia by offering them lucrative job opportunities there, officials said. The central probe agency's FIR has listed 17 other Visa consultancy companies, their owners and agents spread across India, they said.

When Jabalpur forgot about Viksit Bharat
India isn't for the faint-hearted. Among the top survival skills it teaches us, the first is to expect the unexpected. It should, indeed, be the country's unofficial motto, especially after the not-so-pleasant surprise for students in Madhya Pradesh. Earlier this month, Jabalpur's Rani Durgavati University — where Rajneesh, a.k.a. Osho, (unsurprisingly) taught philosophy as Chandra Mohan Jain — released exam timetable for MSc Computer Science first semester exam and issued admit cards. But candidates, many of them from other districts, upon reaching the exam centre on Tuesday, were calmly informed there would be no exam that day. Why? Because the univ didn't prepare question papers. The authorities, we've reliably learnt, forgot they had to conduct an exam.

Reading Mein Kampf doesn't a fascist make
Harbouring a copy of Mein Kampf or My Experiments with Truth doesn't make its possessor a fascist or a Gandhian, respectively. Actions do. This principle was reiterated by the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court this week when it freed former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba and five others in a case accusing them of harbouring Maoist links. The six were arrested in 2013-14 by Maharashtra Police, charged under UAPA, and convicted by a trial court in 2017 for their alleged membership of the banned CPI(Maoist) and its group, Revolutionary Democratic Front. The trial court's ruling in which their possession of Maoist literature was conflated with breaking the law needed to be overturned.

It's a wonder I came out of jail alive: Ex-DU professor Saibaba after release from Nagpur jail
Delhi University professor G N Saibaba, who was released from the Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday after his acquittal in an alleged Maoist links case, said it's a «wonder that he could come out alive» despite suffering the «brutal» jail life. Saibaba (54) said he was targeted for working for the rights of tribals in central and eastern parts of the country and called his arrest an «afterthought». The Bombay High Court on Tuesday set aside the life sentence of Saibaba, noting that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. «There was every chance that I would not have come out alive,» Saibaba told media persons. He had earlier refused to talk to the press saying, «My health is very bad. I can't talk. I will have to first take medical treatment, and then only I will be able to speak.»

Sal Khan Has Big Dreams for AI in Education. Are They Too Big?
A small study published 40 years ago set off shock waves in education circles for decades with claims that the right kind of tutoring vaults middling students to the top of the class. Ever since, a number of educators and tech leaders, inspired by the findings, have been chasing these dramatic gains. The latest to take up this cause is Sal Khan, perhaps the country’s leading evangelist for the potential of artificial intelligence in education and whose nonprofit has developed an AI chatbot.
