EU slaps anti-dumping duty on Indian optical fibre cable manufacturers
European Commission has slapped 8-11.4% anti-dumping duty on Indian optical fibre cable (OFC) manufacturers including Sterlite Technologies, Birla Cables, Universal Cables, Vindhya Telelinks and others who were exporting OFC to Europe. After a six-month long investigation, including being physically present at the factory premises of these companies, the Commission, last week decided to levy the duty on as many as ten companies, barring HFCL which was found to be following fair business practices. Sterlite Technologies Ltd and its subsidiary Sterlite Tech Cables Solutions Ltd are facing the highest levy of 11.4%, followed by Birla Cables, Universal Cables and Vindhya Telelinks who are facing a duty of 8.7%.

Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal on Sunday said the new criminal laws will be introduced from July 1, dismissing opposition allegations of not being consulted before the decision was made. Meghwal said the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Evidence Act will be replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Act. He added that necessary training programmes and infrastructure development for implementing the new laws are already underway. «The three new laws will be implemented from July 1 for providing timely, speedy, and error-free justice,» Meghwal said during the inaugural session of 'India's Progressive Path in the Administration of Criminal Justice System' held here on Sunday.

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday described as "misuse of power" the Delhi Lieutenant Governor's sanction to prosecute author Arundhati Roy under the stringent UAPA for an alleged provocative speech in 2010. He was speaking to reporters during a joint press conference with Maha Vikas Aghadi allies Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan. Asked about Delhi L-G VK Saxena's sanction to prosecute Roy under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA, for an address at an event 14 years ago, the former Union minister said, «This is nothing but misuse of power.» Besides Roy, Saxena on Friday also gave the green signal for action under UAPA against former Central University of Kashmir professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain.

prosecution sanction against author Arundhati Roy and a former professor in Kashmir under the stringent UAPA for allegedly making provocative speeches at an event in Delhi in 2010. According to officials, the FIR against Roy and former Central University of Kashmir professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain was registered following the orders of the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate, New Delhi. Expressing disapproval of the move, the National Conference (NC) stressed the need to uphold the fundamental right of every citizen to free speech as guaranteed by Article 19 of the Constitution. «The NC expresses its strong disapproval of the prosecution of author Arundhati Roy and Dr Sheikh Showkat Hussain under the UAPA (Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act). The use of anti-terror laws to suppress dissent and criminalize speech is deeply concerning,» it said in a post on 'X'.
