Dollar takes a breather ahead of US jobs data
dollar was pinned beneath recent peaks on Thursday with traders taking remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as reassuring on the likelihood of interest rate cuts this year while waiting for the latest U.S. labour market readout. An unexpected slowdown in U.S. services growth also supported cut expectations and weighed on the dollar, though for the year so far it remains the best-performing G10 currency as those expectations are far more modest than three months ago.

Shameful to lie to the people of Karnataka: Krishna Byre Gowda challenges Amit Shah’s claim of delaying drought relief petition
Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Wednesday issued a challenge to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, asking him that if Shah had indeed written to the Election Commission about the Karnataka government delaying applying for drought relief, he must produce the related documents immediately. The Home minister had made the allegation in a rally in Bengaluru on Tuesday, provoking the ire of the Karnataka Congress regime over the contentious issue. “It is shameful to lie to the people of Karnataka to cover up this injustice. Do Kannadigas exist only to pay taxes and vote for you?” the revenue minister asked. Karnataka, he said, ranked second among the highest tax-paying states. It was shameful to divert its taxes to other states, cheat the state during a drought, and then lie about it, he added. Gowda gave a timeline of the drought relief petition process, saying the Karnataka government declared drought in the state on September 13, one and a half months earlier than the October 31 deadline. “If you need proof of our submission for drought relief in September, we can provide a copy of the letter from the Secretary of the Central Home Department dated September 27,” he said.

China pips India in buying sea-borne Russian crude
China to lap up the commodity at deeply discounted prices. China imported 1.82 million barrels a day (mb/d) of Russian crude by sea in March, a third more than India's 1.36 mb/d, according to energy cargo tracker Vortexa. China also receives Russian oil through pipelines.India's monthly imports of seaborne Russian crude exceeded that of China for about one and a half years. In February, however, China's 1.3 mb/d of imports from Russia, marginally surpassed India's 1.27 mb/d. In March, the gap substantially widened. «Russian Sokol cargoes, which were previously rejected by Indian refiners due to concerns of the cargoes being loaded on sanctioned vessels, were sold at heavy discounts to Chinese refiners, which explains the sharp rise in volumes into China,» said Serena Huang, an analyst at Vortexa.

Break old election records: PM to UP BJP workers via digital rally
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday told BJP workers of Uttar Pradesh that it was because of their efforts that new electoral records were being made while asking them to work with a resolve to break all old poll records in the general elections. The prime minister was interacting with the Uttar Pradesh BJP workers through a digital rally at 22,648 booths in 10 Lok Sabha seats through the NaMo App. BJP's booth management is widely credited for its decisive victories in UP in all the major elections since 2014. «We know that no matter how big a victory we wish for in elections, if we don't win booths, we can't win elections and thus the soul of an election victory is in the victory of a booth. This is why it is always my appeal that we have to work with only one aim: We will win our polling booth. We will work with the resolve of breaking all old records of winning polling booths,» Modi told the workers.

No breakthrough in talks between BJP and Kshatriyas
Kshatriya community unrelenting over its demand to drop Union minister and Rajkot candidate Pashottam Rupala from the BJP's Lok Sabha candidate list, the meeting between BJP and the community leaders failed to break the stalemate. While talking to the mediapersons after the meeting, Kshatriya leaders said that they had one demand — to get Rupala dropped — and will not meet with BJP again. «No political party can pressurise us,» Karansing Chavda, one of the community representatives said, adding now posters and banners will be put up on the issue. Another leader of the community told the media that Rupala forgot the glorious history of Rajputs while making the controversial comments and now it has become an issue of self-respect for the community. «So unless BJP doesn't cancel Rupala's ticket, the entire Rajput community will assume that BJP is with Rupala and will respond accordingly.»

IOC in talks with NPCIL for small nuclear reactors
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd is in preliminary talks with atomic power monopoly to build small nuclear units, an early-stage technology seen as a cost-effective alternative to larger plants. The refiner and fuel retailer is exploring a partnership with state-controlled Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd to use small modular reactors, or SMRs, in its refineries for clean power, Alok Sharma, Indian Oil's director for R&D, said at a conference in New Delhi Wednesday. As several bigger projects face delays, policymakers are promoting small-scale nuclear technology with a capacity of up to 300 MW, which is quicker to build and easier to adjust to the requirements of the grid. To boost the nascent sector, the government is considering allowing private firms to manage and operate reactors.
