Vi makes emergency call to DoT for equity conversions, seeks nod for rejigs to get relief on spectrum, AGR dues
Vodafone Idea (Vi) chief executive Akshaya Moondra has appealed to Department of Telecommunications (DoT) secretary Neeraj Mittal to urgently allow equity conversion of the telco’s upcoming adjusted gross revenue (AGR) and purchase dues relating to the 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 spectrum auctions as the cash-strapped company braces for a spike in regulatory payouts. If DoT backs Moondra’s call, the government holding in Vi could jump to 49%, from 22.6% at present. The telecom JV between UK’s Vodafone Plc and India’s Aditya Birla Group has also told DoT that its current financial position does not allow it to furnish a Rs 6,091 crore bank guarantee (BG) or make a cash payment of Rs 5,493 crore towards a shortfall in the 2015 spectrum auction. Under these circumstances, it has asked the DoT not to take “any coercive action” against the company.

Legacy apparel grapples with GeNext rebellion as Gen Z opts for style & value over tags
Boxy shirts, Korean pants, oversized tees and cargos for boys. Gen Zs have aunique way of dressing up. Some 20 brands launched in the past five years and aimed squarely at the social media generation — from Freakins and Bonkers Corner to Urbanic and Newme— are already nibbling into the sales of established rivals such as Zara and H&M in India. Gen Z, the largest consumer cohort, isn’t brand conscious or loyal either, which is hurting global labels. Its members, between the ages of 13 and 28 years, frequently experiment with attire, from head to toe. Also, money isn’t a factor as most of these upcoming brands have price tags of Rs 500-800, almost half that of their rivals.

What is a 'sedentary lifestyle'? Cardiologist warns that too much sitting may be as harmful as smoking
Dr. Stephen Williams, a cardiologist at NYU Langone, is issuing a stern warning: a sedentary lifestyle is just as dangerous as lighting up a cigarette. Many patients, he notes, come into his office boasting about how active they are, only to reveal that their version of “staying active” involves using a standing desk. But here’s the catch—standing still isn’t the same as moving. It still qualifies as a sedentary lifestyle, and the risks associated with it are staggering.

Dummy’s guide to vintage shopping: In the world of fashion, old is new again
vintage watches. Delhi-based fashion consultant and writer Varun Rana has snagged two timeless timekeepers from him. His most prized possession, however, is a 1988 HMT Varun. His hunting grounds are watch repair shops which, he is sad to note, are fast disappearing. Be it watches, jewellery, accessories, or clothes, what is old is new, thanks to a focus on fashion’s wasteful ways. The retro is relevant. It’s often said that a vintage shopper rarely divulges their sources. But ET spoke to second-hand shoppers and specialists to reveal the secrets of vintage shopping. WHAT IS VINTAGE?

As pan-India 'BH' moves about, will states be tempted to display local identity even more prominently—a gopuram with TN, maybe?
licence plates “all manner of alphabetical permutations and combinations were on view”. This included JA (Jamaica), WAG (West Africa and Gambia), FM (Federated Malay States), BI (British India), M (Mandatory Palestine), EA (Kenya and East Africa) and SAU (South African Union). ToI explained that the UK allowed drivers from most countries to use their cars without paying any charge for 90 days, but because the US had not signed the relevant international convention: “American cars are required to be registered with British number plates and this is done at the ship’s side.” Licence plate-spotting goes back a while.

Old songs are like time machines, ride them & let the past play on
time travel. For instance, whenever I hear 'Dekha Hai Maine Tumhe Phir Se Palat Ke' from Ravikant Nagaich's Wardat (1981), it takes me back to my childhood in Kadam Kuan, Patna. A bunch of 15-16-year-old boys are listening to Bappi Lahiri's music on a 45 RPM record. The boys are friends of my elder brother, and I, as a 6-year-old, have been banished from their midst. But I am allowed to peek in through the door. One of the boys is a famed dancer of the mohalla and everyone urges him to do his Mithun routine. I don't rate him highly. It is his white leather boots that, I feel, have prejudiced the jury in his favour. After much coaxing, he gets up, throws his arms in the air, and starts disco dancing. With Mithunda, you don't move around much. You just stand and deliver with hand movements and bent-knee hip gyrations. Decades later, I can still see the white leather boots with 2-inch heels and side zippers I coveted every time I listen to Bappi Lahiri sing that song. Lahiri's special genius was that he sang Hindi songs as if they were a foreign language. More often than not, like a slightly campy Welshman. Wardat was Mithunda's second coming as Gunmaster G-9, our own dancing James Bond. Though not as successful as Suraksha (1980), the soundtrack of Wardat is memorable.

Trump deporting people at a slower rate than Biden's last year in office
Donald Trump deported 37,660 people during his first month in office, previously unpublished U.S. Department of Homeland Security data show, far less than the monthly average of 57,000 removals and returns in the last full year of Joe Biden's administration. A senior Trump administration official and experts said deportations were poised to rise in coming months as Trump opens up new avenues to ramp up arrests and removals. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said Biden-era deportation numbers appeared «artificially high» because of higher levels of illegal immigration.

Tamil Nadu delimitation meet done with eye on '26 polls as DMK lacks achievements to highlight: Sitharaman
DMK was raising «emotional» issues like alleged Hindi imposition and Parliament delimitation as it had nothing to showcase as its own achievements before people during next year's Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Slamming the state's law and order situation, she said there was «lawlessness.» Sitharaman targeted the ruling party over the Anna University woman student sexual assault case. «What happened to that woman? Is the accused your party worker or not? Till date, what is the answer for the Kallakurichi incident,» she asked about the 2024 hooch tragedy that killed many persons. She questioned the DMK as to what has its government achieved 'distinctly' due to its efforts and wondered if it can mention any welfare measures brought to Tamil Nadu. «Nothing,» she said. «So take up emotional issues to hide your inability, corruption...at least these are old issues, now TASMAC (irregularities) has come up. Just like how scams used to come out daily during Manmohan Singh (UPA) government, of which DMK was a part. Such tales are happening,» in the current dispensation in TN, she told a media interaction.

Did two 'Love Is Blind' couples break up over US President Donald Trump?
Love Is Blind has always explored unconventional paths to romance, but its latest season took an unexpected political turn. The season finale, which aired this month, saw two engaged couples call off their weddings—reportedly over their differing political views, as mentioned in a report by Politico. The influence of US President Donald Trump on romantic relationships became a central talking point, sparking widespread debate among fans and political commentators alike. The issue of politics creeping into relationships is not new, but the show's dramatic unraveling of engagements highlighted how ideological differences are increasingly shaping personal connections. With the 2024 presidential election looming, the cultural and political divide in the United States appears to have left its mark on the reality dating scene as well.

Jammu and Kashmir government is working for proper rehabilitation of the victims of a major fire that gutted 40 residential houses in Anantnag district, social welfare minister Sakina Itoo assured the legislative assembly here on Saturday. The minister, who led a four-member team of legislators to visit the scene of Thursday's devastating fire in Kadipora area, said some relief had been given to the victims and more is underway. As the House met on Saturday, National Conference legislator from Bijbehara Bashir Ahmad Veeri tried to raise the issue but the speaker Abdul Rahim Rather asked him to take up his seat, assuring that the government will make a statement. «A total of 40 houses were gutted in the fire, causing massive loss to the victims. I along with MLAs Peerzada (Feroze Ahmad), Altaf Kaloo and Abdul Majid Bhat Larmi met the fire victims yesterday (Wednesday) on the directions of the chief minister (Omar Abdullah). »The district administration had already made arrangements for their food and shelter, while we also had met with the district development commissioner and concerned officers to ensure their rehabilitation," Itoo, who also holds the health and medical education portfolio, told the House after the question hour. She said the victims will be provided relief under Chief Minister's relief fund, while the cheques have been prepared under natural calamity fund for them.
