Engazing with empathy through the female gaze
Lost Ladies) has got me thinking once again about Salaar, Animal, Pushpa, the KGF franchise and their ilk. Kiran Rao's sophomore directorial venture was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023 and will be in Indian theatres in March. For those who have watched it, it may seem blasphemous to mention Rao's quiet study of human nature in the same breath as these other films with their loud, celebratory parades of aggressive masculinity that are all the rage at the Indian box-office these days. But hear me out. Two brides in rural north India who accidentally swap places after their respective weddings are the central figures in LL. Both are lost, not merely in the physical sense after this inadvertent switch, but also in terms of larger existential questions. As their grooms search for them, the women end up finding themselves. A lot has been written over the years about the male gaze in cinema. This is not a term to be used literally. 'The male gaze' is not merely 'the gaze of a man'. It is the gaze of a man who lacks empathy. It is a gaze that may appear to serve the cause of patriarchy and its collaborations with other forms of supremacism, but in fact does a disservice to women and men.

If Modi wins, will bold economic reforms follow?
Modi 3.0 would be a reality. “In the full budget in July, our government will present a detailed roadmap for our pursuit of Viksit Bharat,” she said, her emphasis falling precisely on two words — “our government”. This is possibly the first time a finance minister has exuded such confidence in presenting a vote-on-account, saying on record that the same regime would present the full budget after the elections. ALSO READ: Agenda of Modi 3.0: It will be driven by aspirations like $7 trillion GDP by 2027 The question is, if the Narendra Modi government indeed gets installed for the third time in May, and with a resounding mandate, will it embark on bold and pathbreaking economic reforms? Will the new regime be able to navigate the complexities of pending reforms requiring widespread consensus? Will it unveil radical and unexpected economic overhauls in food, fertiliser and petroleum subsidies? Will it, perhaps, discard all income-tax exemptions?

Real writers, don't write every day, wait for it, wait...
young writer is to write every day. I have always believed one should wait for an image or memory to kickstart the process. The image could be obscure — like, say, the collapsed half of an iron gate, and you squeeze through the gap, and walk down an overgrown garden to a dilapidated bungalow. One does not know why the image is pressing upon your memory. And yet, for days on end, you can't shake it off. You notice the dark, crumbly soil, moist after rain, and then you notice the feet walking upon them, wearing green and white canvas plimsolls. It is the plimsolls that stop me from procrastinating. I take out a notebook and start to write. I recognise the cautious, unsteady gait. It is me at the age of 4. I have to start writing to know where I am going. And a short story begins — one which, perhaps, could turn into a chapter for a novel. But for now, I must follow those tiny feet to see what awaits them. In a novelist or poet's life, months — in many cases, years — go by before a significant image takes hold of his or her mind. And as he or she starts to write, the aperture-setting and focal length of the image shifts, and it becomes clearer and clearer. By the end of a year or two, he or she has a newly minted poem or novel.

Kylian Mbappe, PSG and the dangers of a loveless marriage
Paris St.-Germain, his hometown team, might have carried with them an unmistakable sense of deja vu. They might, uniformly, have carried not a single direct quote from anyone involved, ensuring that all sides have precious room to maneuver should the situation change in the weeks ahead. They might have been copied and pasted, almost verbatim, from the last time this happened, and the time before that. But this is different. This is not a negotiating ploy. This is not a power struggle. He's going. No, really. On the count of five. Given the background, of course, the cynical response is also the sensible one. Mbappé has form here, after all. It is less than two years since he and PSG last came to the brink, his boxes packed, his desk emptied, his goodbye card signed.

Lok Sabha polls: Baramati big battle looms as Supriya Sule versus Sunetra Pawar buzz grows
Maharashtra Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar was asked if his faction of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will put up a candidate from the Lok Sabha constituency of Baramati, the pocket borough of the Pawar clan, against his the cousin Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule, who is the sitting MP, he said, «Being the president of the party, I have the right to announce the candidates of my party, but I cannot comment on who will be contesting against them. I will announce the names of the candidates at the right time.» The name hasn't been announced yet but the buzz is Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar will be contesting against Sule. The fight, if it happens, will take the divide in the Pawar clan down to the family stronghold from where Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar and Supriya Pawar have won several assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Early this month, the Election Commission of India declared Ajit Pawar's faction, which had split away last year from patriarch Pawar and joined hands with the BJP, as the real Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
