You can now pre-book your security check slot at Heathrow
Heathrow airport is launching a trial which will allow passengers to pre-book their security slots way ahead of their journey. The trial started om October 3. Heathrow Timeslot is a free service which will give passengers a designated time and entry point to the security search area. This will help reduce the queue times for all the passengers and allow the airport officials to plan resources more effectively. The trial will be live in Terminal 3 for up to six months and will be made available to passengers flying with American Airlines, Delta, Emirates and Virgin Atlantic. Further airlines may be added during the trial. The outcomes of the trial will inform any future extension or roll-out to other terminals, an official press release by Heathrow said. The process of booking the timeslot is easy. Once you are flying with an eligible airline partner, you can book your slot up to three days before your flight. The slot will remain open until 90 minutes before your long-haul flights and until 60 minutes for short-haul flight. To book your slot, you will just need your email address and flight number. You will not be required to go through any registration process. Once you book your slot, you will be sent an email with your booking confirmation and a QR code which you will require to access your slot. The time slot allows for 15 minutes of buffer time. This time slot does not apply for airline's check-in and bag drop queues.

Australia will no longer let international students enroll in two courses simultaneously
Australia will no longer let international students enroll in two courses concurrently during the first six months of their principal course of study. This change in rule is intended to crack down on 'dodgy' education providers that have been misusing the concurrent enrollment policy to encourage students to switch institutions. The government says that the new rules will help to ensure the integrity of the international education sector and protect students from exploitation. The new rules do not impact students who are already holding concurrent enrolments. However, students looking to enroll in a second course concurrently after the first six months of their principal course of study will need to obtain approval from their education provider. There are a few exceptions. «For example, students will still be able to enroll concurrently in a course that is an approved component of a combined or double degree. Additionally, students who have a valid reason for needing to enroll concurrently, such as extenuating circumstances, may be able to obtain an exemption from the rules,» Saurabh Arora, CEO and Founder, University Living, explains.

OPT program for international STEM students to continue as US Supreme Court refuses hearing
international STEM students in the United States, the Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal challenging the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. The OPT program, which permits international students in the United States on student visas to work during their studies or up to one year post-graduation, has been a crucial pathway for international students seeking employment opportunities in the country. At the heart of the case was the extension of the OPT program for up to 36 months after graduation, a provision introduced by the Department of Homeland Security in 2008 and modified in 2016. This extension was exclusively available to students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields, making it especially attractive to tech companies. The Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (Washtech), a Communication Workers of America affiliate, initiated the legal challenge against this extension in 2014, arguing that it allowed tech employers to sidestep the H-1B visa program, which has limited annual quotas and is assigned through a lottery system. The STEM OPT extension not only simplifies the hiring process for tech employers but also enables visa holders to apply for a green card during their stay in the US, offering a pathway to permanent residency similar to H-1B visa holders. Throughout the legal battle, Washtech faced several setbacks, including a critical decision by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals in 2022. The union's argument questioned the Department of Homeland Security's authority to establish the OPT STEM extension, contending that it reshaped the entire non-immigrant visa system and undermined protections for American workers.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar Killing: Keep embassy staff equal, Canada told
India has asked Canada to reduce its number of diplomats across its missions in the country and repatriate 41 diplomats by early next week, saying it would revoke their diplomatic immunity if they stayed after the given date. This comes just weeks after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of a «potential» involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. While the Indian government is yet to issue a statement on its latest move, sources have indicated to ET that the decision to ask Canada to reduce its diplomats by October 10 is aimed at bringing the strength of Indian missions and Canadian missions on par. Indian missions in Canada have around 21 diplomats and the Canadian missions in India currently have 62 diplomats. Meanwhile, Trudeau went on the backfoot on Tuesday and said that his government was «not looking to escalate the situation» with India.

UK migration advisor tells Sunak government to scrap special visa rules for shortage occupations
The MAC conducted a review of the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) and expressed concerns that making it easier to recruit low-wage workers could increase the risk of exploitation. Currently, employers can hire migrant workers at 80% of the standard «going rate» for specific occupations listed on the SOL. This includes roles like bricklayers and care workers. Being on the SOL allows employers to bypass the general minimum salary threshold for a skilled worker visa, which is £26,200. Consequently, sectors with wages below this threshold have particularly benefited from inclusion on the list. The MAC's recommendation stems from concerns that low-wage migrants may result in a net fiscal cost for the UK, and the administrative burden of the scheme can be uneconomical for many businesses. The committee believes that abolishing the SOL would be a preferable approach to addressing labor shortages in low-wage sectors. The MAC suggested that no employer should be allowed to pay below the going rate, as this would help protect resident workers from wage undercutting and reduce the potential exploitation of migrant workers. The Home Office has not provided an immediate response to the report.

This marks an escalation in the crisis that erupted after Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said India has hands in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was a designated terrorist in India and Khalistani activist. New Delhi has told Ottawa that it must repatriate roughly 40 diplomats by October 10, FT reported citing people familiar with the demand.
