West Bengal govt announces host of measures to ensure safety of women at workplaces
Kolkata: The West Bengal government announced a slew of measures to ensure the safety of women in workplaces, particularly at state-run hospitals, where they have to work on night shifts, too, including designated retiring rooms and CCTV-monitored 'safe zones'. Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, announced the measures during a press meet here on Saturday, amid continuing protests by doctors across the state against the alleged rape and murder of a medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Apart from hospitals and medical colleges, hostels and other places engaging women during night shifts will now come under the ambit of a flagship programme 'Rattirer Sathi — Helpers of the Night', comprising volunteers, he said. The state government has also decided to develop a mobile application with alarm devices, which can be downloaded by women and used for communication with the respective local police stations in case of any emergency.

When a ghastly crime becomes fodder for ‘Khela hobey’ politics, it’s changing time
West Bengal administration has proceeded with the horrific case. Last Friday, when Di's body was discovered, authorities of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College & Hospital tried to pass off the murder as suicide to the victim's family. The police initially did the same. After all, why on Earth would a state-affiliated institution's authorities lie? Trying to pass off homicide as suicide is SOP if you want to put a lid on things. Self-sexual assault — self-rape — is, however, far more difficult to spin. So, a case of rape-murder it has officially become.

Tamil Nadu nurse becomes a hero in Wayanad with daring zip-line rescue
The rescue mission's unlikely hero was A. Sabeena, a 40-year-old nurse from Gudalur town in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district. For five consecutive days, Sabeena risked her life by zip-lining across the turbulent river, ultimately saving 35 lives. Her incredible bravery and selflessness earned her the prestigious Kalpana Chawla Award for daring and courageous enterprise during the Independence Day celebrations, along with a cash prize of ₹5 lakh. Sabeena received the call for help on the morning of July 30. Her colleagues at the NGO where she worked informed her that the Kerala government urgently needed nurses in Wayanad. Without hesitation, Sabeena packed her bags and embarked on a 70-kilometer journey to the disaster-stricken area, braving heavy rain, strong winds, and knee-deep mud. Despite having seen footage of the devastation, with bodies scattered and houses washed away, Sabeena remained undeterred, driven by her determination to assist those in need.
