Can Israel's ultra-Orthodox military volunteers help defuse the battle over conscription?
ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, whose exemption from compulsory military service is dividing Israel and threatens to topple its government. He is also a major in the infantry reserves of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). The long-standing military waiver for the ultra-Orthodox has sparked waves of protest in recent weeks by more secular Israelis, angry that they are shouldering the risk and drudgery of fighting the war in Gaza, now six months old. In city streets, ultra-Orthodox demonstrators have scuffled with combat veterans who sport khaki shirts and hoist national flags. In fact, around 10% of the haredim, as the ultra-Orthodox are known, come forward voluntarily for the standard three years of military service, Levi said. Some go on to be officers, like him.

BJP 'openly' violating poll code but EC not acting: Atishi
AAP leader Atishi on Wednesday alleged that the BJP was «openly» violating the model code of conduct and the Election Commission was not acting against it, affecting the level-playing field in the Lok Sabha polls. In an interview to PTI, she said the AAP was hopeful of opening its account in Assam where the party has fielded candidates in two seats — Dibrugarh and Sonitpur, which are going to the polls in the first phase on April 19. «Yesterday AAP had a rally in Tinsukia. We applied for permission before the BJP. But as Amit Shah was coming for a roadshow, AAP's permission was denied. We were made to change our routes and our timing. Our party workers and volunteers were not allowed to reach the location,» she claimed. «Openly and brazenly the model code of conduct was violated by the BJP, and yet there was no action from the EC,» Atishi added.

AAP supporters worldwide condemn arrest of Arvind Kejriwal; observe day of fast in solidarity
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) globally have observed a day of protest and fasting in solidarity with party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in an alleged money laundering case. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21, hours after the high court refused to grant him protection from coercive action by the federal anti-money laundering agency. He is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail. AAP volunteers in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia gathered in front of Indian embassies and popular locations on Monday to protest Kejriwal's arrest and call for his immediate release, a media release said. «Arvind Kejriwal is a symbol of hope for millions of Indians who are fighting for a more just and equitable society,» said AAP member Jeswanth Reddy from Los Angeles. «His arrest is an attack on democracy and the right to dissent. We will not be silenced.»

Govt plans to turn Leh into war zone, border march was cancelled for the sake of peace: Sonam Wangchuk
Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday alleged that the administration has turned Leh into a war zone to instigate protestors and considering such situation the proposed Pashmina March towards the border on April 7 has been cancelled. Wangchuk informed that the government is behaving like a “mad elephant." With the deployment of forces across Leh, Wangchuk said, there is a possibility of reaction from people and something can be «orchestrated as well» so that the ongoing peaceful protest is labelled as violent and then scuttled. “Our aim was not to confront the administration or create any law and order situation. But considering the risk of violence we are withdrawing the protest march,” said Wangchuk.
