West Asia crisis hits Iran's status as favoured place for higher studies among Kashmiri families
The families of such students are deeply perturbed over the unfolding of events, especially in the backdrop of the escalation in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict and Israel-Hamas war. Iran fired around 200 missiles into Israel on October 1 in response to Israel's killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and other commanders of the militant outfit. Following the Iranian action, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran will «pay» for it.

Hamas weakened, not crushed a year into war with Israel
Israel's military campaign to eradicate Hamas in retaliation for the October 7 attack has weakened it by killing several of its leaders and thousands of fighters, and by reducing swaths of the territory it rules to rubble. But the Palestinian militant group has not been crushed outright, and a year on from its unprecedented attack on Israel, an end to its hold over Gaza remains elusive. Hamas sparked the Gaza war by sending hundreds of fighters across the border into Israel on October 7, 2023, to attack communities in the south.

Army documenting weapons of US origin reaching Kashmir: Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai
Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Army's strategic Srinagar-based Chinar Corps, told reporters that efforts are being made to pursue the issue with the US to track such weapons. He was responding to a question about the concerns over recovery of US-origin weapons from Afghanistan in the valley. «The process still takes place, and it happens immediately after such a weapon is recovered. As far as the trail is concerned, I think to most people who are discernible, the trail is clear.

Israel calls for more evacuations from south Lebanon; 9 dead in Beirut strike
southern Lebanon that are north of a UN-declared buffer zone, signaling that it may widen a ground operation launched earlier this week against the Hezbollah militant group. Israel has told people to leave Nabatieh, a provincial capital, and other communities north of the Litani River, which formed the northern edge of the border zone established by the UN Security Council after the 2006 war in a resolution that both sides accuse the other of violating. At least eight Israeli soldiers have been killed in clashes with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, where Israel announced the start of what it says is a limited ground incursion earlier this week. The region was meanwhile bracing for Israeli retaliation following an Iranian ballistic missile attack.

Israel's secret weapon against Iran can be a deadly option
Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel, it warned Iran of consequences with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that Iran would «pay for the attack». Some analysts said Israel's response would likely be sharper this time, suggesting it could target Iran's nuclear or oil facilities. The US, meanwhile, is pushing for a measured Israeli response to avoid a broader regional war, but its influence may be limited in shaping Israel's next steps. This latest round of hostilities threatens to expand far beyond the Israel-Palestine struggle, pulling in regional powers like Iran, and sparking fears of a full-scale war across the Middle East. US President Joe Biden has said that he would not support an attack by Israel on Iranian nuclear sites in retaliation for Tehran's firing of missiles at Israeli cities. «The answer is no,» Biden said on Wednesday, when asked if he would support such retaliation after Iran fired missiles at Israel.

A full-blown Israel-Iran war can imperil India's oil security
Middle East after Iran attacked Israel with barrage of missiles on Tuesday night. While Israel has vowed to make Iran «pay» for firing missiles at its territory, Tehran warned on Wednesday it would launch an even bigger attack if it is targeted. A full-scale war between the two countries will not bode well for India's energy security as India imports a large part of its oil and gas from the region. Oil prices climbed more than 3% on Wednesday as Israel and the United States vowed retribution over Iran's biggest ever direct attack on Israel, Reuters reported. With Israel also ordering more soldiers into Lebanon to battle Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, the conflict has rapidly intensified with little sign of de-escalation despite international pleas. That has sent oil prices surging, with Brent futures up $2.26, or 3.07%, to $75.82 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude jumped $2.38, or 3.42%, to $72.22 by 1320 GMT. Both crude benchmarks on Tuesday surged more than 5% before closing around 2.5% higher. A full-blown war can cause a big spurt in crude oil prices. India imports most of its oil and gas and higher prices will impact inflation as well as economic growth.

Ukraine's military will pull out of Vuhledar in the east after 2 years of intense fighting
Vuhledar, perched atop a tactically significant hill in eastern Ukraine, after more than two years of grinding battle, military officials said Wednesday. Vuhledar, a town Ukrainian forces fought tooth and nail to keep, is the latest urban settlement to fall to the Russians as the war stretches deep into its third year and the Ukrainian army is gradually being pushed backward in the eastern Donetsk province. It follows a vicious summer campaign along the eastern front that saw Kyiv cede several thousand square kilometers (square miles) of territory as the Russian army hacks its way westward, obliterating towns and villages with missiles, glide bombs, artillery and drones.

After attack by Iran, will Israel choose the 'nuclear option'?
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian commander Nilforoshan as well as Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh? Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said that Iran made a big mistake, and it would pay for it. It is clear that Israel is going to strike Iran hard, and many think it could be targeted assassinations as well as air strikes. Israel’s war cabinet has not decided exactly what form the response will take, Axios reported, and wants to first discuss its options with the United States. “We have a big question mark about how the Iranians are going to respond to an attack, but we take into consideration the possibility that they would go all in, which will be a whole different ball game,” an Israeli official told Axios. Naftali Bennett, a former Israeli prime minister, has urged Israel to attack “destroy [Iran’s] nuclear project, destroy their major energy facilities and critically hit this terrorist regime.” Any Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear sites can potentially be dangerous as Iran's nuclear capabilities are not fully known even though it denies it has any nuclear weapon. Any such strikes by Israel can prompt similar tit-for-tat strikes by Iran.
