Bengaluru tech belt hit by double whammy of water supply crisis and rising demand due to work from office rules
flash floods, tech parks in Bengaluru are now gearing up to face a severe water shortage crisis, months before peak summer. With work-from-office enforced by most corporations, demand for water in these areas is higher than last year, at a time when weak southwest monsoon has created a drought situation across most of Karnataka. The $245 billion IT industry has seen top companies including TCS, Infosys and Wipro calling people to “return-to-office” for a minimum of around 3-5 days a week. Bangalore Apartments' Federation General Secretary Vishnu Gattupalli told ET that tanker water supply is not enough to meet the needs of the employees who have returned from their hometowns, tech offices, and residents in the ‘Silicon Valley’s’ tech belt. Residents of areas like Whitefield, Mahadevpura and RR Nagar – home to companies like Infosys, Wipro, IBM, Tech Mahindra – have been advised to ration the water they have and use it judiciously, he added. While the median tanker rate is Rs 131 per 1000 litres, the price climbs up along the city’s tech belt, with areas like Horamavu paying Rs 207 per 1000 litres and RR Nagar residents paying Rs 238 per 1000 litres, according to a survey by the Federation.

Inflated water bills will be waived if INDIA bloc candidates win in Delhi: Kejriwal
Kejriwal Sunday asked people in Delhi to vote for INDIA bloc in the Lok Sabha polls so that their voices can be heard in Parliament and assured that inflated water bills will be waived off if the alliance's candidates are elected. Speaking at a protest organised by his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against inflated water bills here, Kejriwal said on a lighter note that he should be given the Nobel Prize for running the government despite the alleged hurdles created by the BJP. «If you choose the INDIA bloc this time, Delhi will have its own defence armour and nobody can trouble the people then… No LG will then be able to harm the people of Delhi since we'll have a strong representation in the Parliament,» he said.

India completely stops Ravi river water flow to Pakistan. Historical context and significance
Shahpur Kandi barrage has effectively ceased the flow of water from the Ravi river into Pakistan, according to a report. Located on the Punjab-Jammu and Kashmir border, this development signifies a significant shift in water allocation, with the Jammu and Kashmir region now set to benefit from the 1150 cusecs of water previously destined for Pakistan. The diverted water will serve irrigation purposes, providing a boon to over 32,000 hectares of land in the Kathua and Samba districts. Despite facing numerous challenges over the past three decades, the Shahpur Kandi barrage project, essential for irrigation and hydropower generation, is on the brink of completion. Under the 1960 Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan, India possesses exclusive rights over the waters of the Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas rivers, while Pakistan controls the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers. The successful implementation of the Shahpur Kandi barrage empowers India to maximize the utilization of the Ravi river's waters, redirecting previously allocated resources from the old Lakhanpur dam towards Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

'Totally cold' is not too cold for winter swimmers competing in a frozen Vermont lake
frozen lake and swimming laps may not be everyone's good time but for winter swimmers who return year after year to a northern Vermont lake near the Canadian border, there's nothing better. The 10th annual Memphremagog Winter Swimming Festival kicked off Friday with the 200-meter (218-yard) freestyle race in a narrow pool cut from the ice. But the festivities started Thursday and on Friday morning some of the 180 participants swam a lap wearing a decorated hat. «It was amazing. It's the highlight of my year,» said Andie Nelson, of Arlington, Virginia, after swimming 25 meters (27 yards) in the hat competition. «It makes me happy.»
