Voltas expands into water heaters to transform into an home appliance co
Voltas has ventured into the water heater segment as part of its plan to transform into a home appliance manufacturer. Water heaters are a thriving category in the Indian market with an annual demand of around five million units. The segment has experienced consistent growth of 10-12 per cent year on year, with sales happening for ten months in a year. Pradeep Bakshi, managing director and CEO of Voltas, said with the arrival of festival season, the demand for hot water solutions have seen a considerable uptick, making this the perfect time for this new launch. «As we expand our product portfolio, we remain committed to providing our customers with smart and reliable solutions that enhance their daily lives,» he said. Voltas said besides the extreme weather conditions, the increasing real estate footprint and disposable incomes will lead to a surge in the penetration of electrical water heaters.

Warmer oceans blamed for disappearance of billions of Alaska's Snow crabs
ocean temperatures for the extinction of billions of snow crabs in Alaska's Bering Sea. The most recent discoveries of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shed light on the unexpected loss of snow crabs, resulting in the postponement of the snow crab harvest season for the second year in a row. The study, authored by Cody Szuwalski, a fishery biologist at NOAA, highlights a compelling connection between marine heat waves in the eastern Bering Sea and the mysterious disappearance of snow crabs, a phenomenon that emerged in surveys in 2021.

Retired Australian architect reminisces 50 years of devotion to Sydney's Opera House
SYDNEY, — Immediately recognisable by its sails glistening over the waters of Sydney Harbour, the UNESCO-listed Sydney Opera House is one of the world's most photographed buildings. Officially opened in 1973 and celebrating its 50th anniversary on Friday, 'The House' as it's affectionately known, has wowed generations of audiences with world-class performances inside one of the greatest architectural structures of the 20th century. Former architect and now part-time tour guide Peter Sekules' appreciation for the Sydney Opera House started as a five-year-old when his parents first took him to see the shiny white sails under construction, inspiring a life-long love of architecture. «I remember this unusual shaped building coming out of the peninsula...because a lot of the buildings and houses I was living in were all squares and rectangles and then there was this very funny shape of a building,» Sekules told Reuters from inside the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. As part of the 1956 Opera House international design competition, 233 designs were submitted by architects from around the world with Jorn Utzon from Denmark chosen as the winner. Construction began in 1959 with the project meant to take four years to complete, but after Utzon resigned due to a change in government, design differences and a blow out in costs, the structure took 14 years to complete. «When I read some of his inspirations for the Opera House, he said he really wanted to make it a contrast to all the squares and rectangles which I was brought up with and to really make this as a piece of sculpture,» Sekules said.

Biden to seek billions in military aid for Israel as invasion of Gaza nears
Biden on Thursday asked Americans to spend billions more dollars to help Israel fight Hamas while Israel's defence chief told his troops to be ready to go into the Gaza Strip to destroy the Palestinian militant group. In a televised White House speech late on Thursday that also addressed Ukraine's effort to repel Russia's invasion, Biden said Hamas sought to «annihilate» Israel's democracy. The president, who made an eight-hour visit to Israel on Wednesday, also stressed the urgency of getting relief to Palestinian civilians in Gaza who lack food, water and medicine. «We can't ignore the humanity of innocent Palestinians who only want to live in peace and have opportunity,» he said. Biden said he would ask Congress on Friday to approve extra funding for Israel.

Kidz About closed in Swindon but reason is not a business one
Kidz About, located in the Spectrum building in Swindon, was already slated for closure in the near future. However, torrential rain recently caused damage to the center's serving area, kitchen, and toilets over the weekend. As a result, this beloved soft-play center had to close its doors ahead of schedule. Sadly, this marked the second time in just a few weeks that the facility had fallen victim to flooding. Alistair Burnett, the managing director, expressed that it was time to take decisive action in response to these recurring challenges. Much of northern Europe braced for stormy weather and gale-force winds from the east on Thursday, with authorities warning that floods could cause major problems in inland Danish waters, in the Baltic Sea and in the north of the UK, as per an AP report. Danish broadcaster TV2 reported that the region would likely see the worst flooding in 110 years, and the Danish Meteorological Institute said waves could reach 4 meters (13 feet) along east-facing coasts. In the UK, the Met Office issued a rare red alert — the highest level of weather warning — for parts of Scotland, warning of «exceptional rainfall» Thursday and Friday and the possibility of a «danger to life» from extensive flooding. The last red alert in the UK was issued in 2020. Officials warned Scots to stay away from coastal areas. In Ireland, the storm — named Storm Babet by UK officials — brought flooding to several towns and villages, with some areas remaining under water and without power Thursday. Soldiers helped with evacuation measures in the town of Midleton in County Cork, where more than 100 properties were flooded.

Shifting Tides in Indian Realty: The impact of financiers favoring sustainable property development
As the world grapples with rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, real estate has emerged as a critical player in the fight against climate change. Currently, a mere 10% of India’s total buildings are certified green. In a scenario where the real estate and construction sector accounts for 36% of the world’s total energy consumption and is responsible for nearly 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, this is a wake-up call to an industry that is a vital part of the solution.
