This scrutiny comes as the Trump administration has time and again criticized USAID for allegedly promoting a «left, liberal and woke» agenda abroad. The ED is currently investigating three Bengaluru-based companies for purported violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, specifically regarding the receipt of Rs 25 crore from the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF). Among these companies, ASAR Social Impact Advisors has also been noted for receiving Rs 8 crore from USAID as foreign inward remittance during FY23. The central agency is particularly interested in understanding the motives and purposes behind the payments made by USAID. Notably, the Open Society Foundations was categorized under the 'prior reference category' by the home ministry in 2016 due to concerns over «undesirable activities.» This classification mandates that it must obtain prior approval from the ministry before contributing funds to any Indian non-profit organization.

The water supply, discontinued on Saturday evening, was restored on Sunday after the railway authorities initiated the process of payment of the current bill amounting to Rs 1.17 crore, they said. Despite prior notices from the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, the rail authorities failed to clear the outstanding dues, prompting assistant civic commissioner Sachin Tamkhede to disconnect the water supply on Saturday to the Kalyan station, located in Thane district, the civic body said in a release. Later, following urgent discussions with the civic body, the railway authorities initiated the process for payment of Rs 1.17 crore, the current bill amount, and assured the KDMC that the remaining dues would be settled soon, it said. KDMC Commissioner Dr Indu Rani Jakhar subsequently directed for the immediate restoration of water supply to the station on Sunday evening, the release said. Tamkhede said a meeting with railway officials will be held next week to discuss the issue of the outstanding dues.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal has not ended his indefinite fast even though he drank a glass of water after farmers detained last week by the state police were released from different jails, farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar said on Saturday. The Punjab government on Friday told the Supreme Court that Dallewal accepted water and broke his fast. Countering the Punjab government's claims, Kohar said on Saturday Dallewal had made it clear he would take water only after all the farmers are released. «And Dallewal drank a glass of water after farmer leaders were released,» said Kohar, a close aide of Dallewal. «We want to make it clear that a false impression was being given that Dallewal has ended his indefinite fast. His hunger strike continues.» Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh told the apex court on Friday they dispersed on March 19 the farmers protesting at Khanauri and Shambhu border points with Haryana, and opened the roads and highways that were blocked due to the sit-ins.
