Troubled Waters: Will the Seine be clean enough by the Olympics? Not even the experts know yet
Paris Olympics less than two weeks away, a question hangs over the Games: Will the Seine River be clean enough for athletes to swim in? Triathlon and marathon swimming are scheduled to take place in the Seine, where it has been illegal to swim for more than a century. Despite the city's efforts to clean up the long-polluted river, the water has tested unsafe for humans in recent weeks, and cleaner on other days. The Games run from July 26-Aug. 11. To clean up the river, Paris invested 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in building infrastructure to catch more stormwater when it rains — the same water that contains bacteria-laden wastewater that enters the river during periods of heavy rain and makes it unsafe to swim in. In May, Paris officials inaugurated a giant underground water storage basin next to the Austerlitz train station aimed at collecting excess rainwater and stopping wastewater from entering the Seine. The basin can hold the equivalent of 20 Olympic swimming pools of dirty water that will now be treated and is the centerpiece of major infrastructure improvements that the city has rushed to finish in time for the Games, but to also ensure that Parisians have a cleaner Seine in years to come.

Climate irony: Clean hydropower faces a dry patch
The world’s biggest source of renewable energy has been going through a dry patch. Generation from solar farms roughly tripled between 2018 and 2023, while the output of wind turbines almost doubled. That provided enough extra clean energy to power Japan and Russia put together.

Green revolution 2.0: Why India needs an integrated energy policy
Coal: The challenge in weaning away from coal for power generation (accounts for 75% generation, 50% carbon emission) lies in developing round-the-clock (RTC) alternate supplies at affordable prices. While solar tariffs are competitive, for the short to medium term, the complementing low-carbon capacities for RTC supplies are currently expensive (battery), or risk laden (hydel resources). The supply security in meeting the rising demand is equally important.

solar power generation. While the cost of photovoltaic cells has come down dramatically, electricity generation is limited to the period when the sun shines. In a year, this works out to around 18-20% utilization of the panels, compared to 80% for a coal-fired plant.

Will NASA make human base in lunar caves? How long these caves on Moon are and will humans take drinking water from caves?
Moon as well? Some of those caves are as big as 130 feet or 40 meters wide and tens of yards meters long, reports AP. Talking to the BBC, Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut to travel to space said that humans could potentially be living in lunar pits in 20-30 years as these caves looked like a good place for a base. She also said that this cave is so deep that astronauts might have to use “jet packs or a lift” to get out.

Services business a hard sell for FMCG companies focused on products
Hindustan Unilever's decision to sell its Pureit water filter business yet again demonstrates how fast-moving consumer goods companies fail to undertake services. Pureit is a consumer durable product requiring after-sales service. HUL entered the water purifier business in 2004 and launched Pureit nationwide in 2008, but ended up classifying the business to be non-core. There are several instances of FMCG companies entering service business that didn't work for them on expected lines. In 2009, Jyothy Labs launched a laundry business through a chain called Fabricspa, with an investment of Rs 40 crore. Over the years, the business grew at a slower pace compared to the rest of the business. It contributed 2% of the total revenue of Jyothy Labs in FY24.
