markets Waves Booking Election show cover reports Banks' profits healthy, but margins may shrink and deposits could disappoint
stress in unsecured retail, micro finance and some rural advances as seasonal impact of the heatwave, election season slowdown and higher risk weights led to increase in slippages during the first quarter. However, analysts do not expect asset quality to be a challenge yet. Instead, most observers believe that Indian lenders will have to contend with falling margins and slow deposit growth this year. Data from the results of 40 listed banks analysed by ET showed that though net profit increased a healthy 21%, margins continued to be weak and deposit growth still lagged credit demand. There was a notable increase in stress in some micro finance and personal loan accounts. State Bank of India's fresh slippages increased to ₹7,903 crore in June 2024 from ₹7,659 crore a year ago and was double the ₹3,867 crore reported in March 2024 mainly as ₹3,000 crore of loans to individuals slipped during the quarter and was the largest chunk of fresh slippages, followed by ₹2,500 crore of agriculture loans. Chairman Dinesh Khara attributed the slippages to some delay in salaries by some state governments during the quarter.

markets COST Waves CEO NVIDIA reports The GenAI hype check is great news for artificial intelligence
Is Generative AI worth the money? Tech leaders like Microsoft chief technology officer Kevin Scott says costs will come down and capabilities improve, but as Wall Street heads toward correction territory— Nvidia and Microsoft, two stocks that have ridden the AI wave, are down more than 15% and 8% respectively since 10 July—enterprises are grappling with a deeper problem: How do they put AI to use and measure the return on that investment? Confusion over the answer has led to discomfort, sparked by bearish reports from Goldman Sachs and Sequoia Capital questioning whether GenAI will make as much money as the market seems to think. AI capital expenditure will reach between $600 billion and $1 trillion in the coming years, the reports estimate, and spending on infotech will rise 8% this year, according to Gartner. markets Waves Sustainability Election wellness Trade track Market may be marginally disappointed with Q1 result season: Jitendra Sriram
Based on the consensus expectations, Jitendra Sriram, Senior Fund Manager, Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund, expects the market may be marginally disappointed with the earnings in the current quarter. «While the consensus earnings for FY2024-25 are in the low teens, we expect the growth to be more in 2H,» he said, explaining that elections and heat waves slowed down economic activities during the quarter. Edited excerpts: With Sensex above 81,000, how tough is it to find new stocks to invest in? Many stocks are trading well above their historical average valuation levels. Index hitting a new high is a derivative of high economic activity and function of earnings growth. Despite equity trading at a new high, valuations are in line with long term averages. Thus, market returns are tracking earnings momentum.

Waves Waters Racing Pool Swimming Olympics Higher, stronger…slower? Why the Paris Olympic pool has a problem
NANTERRE , FRANCE : Several days into an Olympic swim meet that has featured uncharacteristically sluggish times and a decided lack of world records, a potential problem has emerged: The water might be too shallow. The pool constructed on the customary site of a rugby pitch measures 2.2 meters deep, or roughly 7-feet-2, which means French basketball star Victor Wembanyama could comfortably stand in it. At recent Olympics, the pool has always been around 3 meters deep—a difference of nearly 3 feet.
