ETMarkets Smart Talk: Equities poised for 16% returns in 2024, gold looks toppish: Naveen Kulkarni, Axis Securities PMS
“There may be challenges, such as missed earnings or further small cuts in the next two quarters, but even then, a 15% to 16% return looks achievable in markets, which is quite good,” says Naveen Kulkarni, CIO, Axis Securities PMS. In an interview with ETMarkets, Kulkarni said: “As for other asset classes, I feel gold is looking toppish, so equities should have significantly higher allocations compared to other assets” Edited excerpts: Thanks for taking the time out. Well, after a weak October, investors are going through a volatile November. What is your take on the markets? Let us rewind a little and see how we have been faring this fiscal year. FY24 ended pretty well, with very strong earnings. Nifty earnings grew by almost 25%. However, on that base, growth has been slightly challenging. Moreover, there have been challenges with how things have been on the ground. There were elections in the first quarter, and the monsoon in the second quarter was quite strong. Various factors, including weather and political aspects, have impacted the order flow. The first half has been slower than expected, contributing to the correction we have seen in the market.

Bank guarantee waiver removes key impediment to Vi’s pending debt-raise: Axis Capital
Vodafone Idea (Vi) will be the main beneficiary of the bank guarantees (BG) waiver cleared by the Cabinet, and the move will hasten the telco’s pending Rs 25,000 crore debt raise, analysts said. Earlier this month, Vi’s CEO Akshaya Moondra had said that the telco’s lenders wanted clarity from the government on any potential relief on the company’s substantial AGR (adjusted gross revenue) dues as well as prospects of a waiver of BGs before lending. “Vi is the biggest beneficiary of the reported BG waiver. One impediment to the debt raise is now behind,” Axis Capital said in a research note seen by ET.

Government spending and liquidity easing to spur growth: Satish Kothari
«We expect pickup in government-led spending and easing of liquidity, which will start aiding growth from next quarter onwards. Last 18 months to 24 months, we have seen a lot of stock run up and sectors run up in Indian markets,» says Satish Kothari, SageOne Investment Advisors. In the last two months, we have seen a 3000 points correction in the benchmark and a recovery of nearly 1000 points from the lows. So, how are you positioning yourself amidst such volatility? What is your market view at current juncture if you could just take us through that? Satish Kothari: The Indian markets have cooled off in the last two months primarily driven by Q2 FY25 earnings, which were quite weak and FIIs selling and rising geopolitical uncertainties. The broader outlook for near-term continues to be a bit uncertain, driven by external global environment and investors will watch out for how Q3 FY25 earnings pans out for corporate India. However, when we look at Indian macro environment, it continues to be strong and stable.
