Pockets in auto, retail & PSU have run up too fast, too soon; avoid for next 6-9 months: Pawan Parakh
Pawan Parakh, Fund Manager, Geojit Financial Services, says in auto, we have hardly scratched the surface as far as electric vehicles are concerned, but a lot of these companies are getting valuations as if EV is 20%, 30%, 40% of their sales. This is one segment where, even at the OEM level, there are unbelievable valuations. Apart from that, in the retail space, once again some of the companies, despite how good the performance is, the valuations can be justified. Also, in some of these PSU names, a lot of the stocks have run up as if they are great Maharatna companies. These are the few pockets Parakh will be looking for the next two-three quarters. What so far within the earnings has really stood out for you either as a positive or a negative surprise? Pawan Parakh: So far not many companies have reported their earnings but whatever is out, it is one sector which we continue to like. Very clearly from now on or maybe a quarter onward you should see momentum coming back as far as its revenues are concerned. So, it is one sector which looks good. Some of the data that we picked up from various channels is that this time around e-comm sales are also being reasonably good.

From 16 cars, 23 cellphones and $50 million to zero: How Al Pacino went broke in no time
Al Pacino got into financial trouble with $400K in landscaping for a house, 23 cell phones, and 16 cars, which he never used. When Al Pacino realized he was broke in the middle of the 1980s, he was seeing Diane Keaton. Despite being a tremendous box office and critical success, Pacino reportedly only received $35,000 for the film, so it wasn't a big payday for him. He writes that he was broke when he finished making 'The Godfather.' He didn't have any money at all, but he owed money. He had to rely on Jill Clayburgh for support while his manager and agents took their cut of his pay.

Maharashtra's pre-budget welfare schemes not to dent state finances: Icra
Maharashtra government is unlikely to dent the state's financial position, a domestic rating agency said. Icra Ratings' chief economist Aditi Nayar also expects that there will not be a «runaway increase» in spending even though the «rhetoric may be very high». She explained that Maharashtra fares well on the state debt front, and the leverage levels are among the lowest in the country. Concerns have been raised in the recent past over schemes like the Rs 46,000-crore Ladki Bahin Yojana of providing cash handouts to women or the decision to discontinue tolls for cars while entering or exiting the financial capital.

Marcellus orienting portfolios towards bottom-up stock picking: Rakshit Ranjan
Rakshit Ranjan of Marcellus Investment Managers says markets have run ahead of fundamentals and hence, if one wants to pick up stocks where upside from positive surprises can come, it requires a lot of bottom-up picking rather than any top-down or broader sectoral calls. Further, Marcellus used to have a far greater exposure to specialty chemicals space in some of their funds until about a year, year-and-a-half ago. It is relatively low now. There are some companies in their small and midcap portfolios where supply side issues are much less worrisome now as compared to about six months ago. These are more B2B and export-oriented chemical companies. What are the expectations with respect to earnings because a large part of the Street believes that we had run up ahead of fundamentals and now earnings have peaked and there are chances of more downgrades than upgrades? Rakshit Ranjan: I agree with your broad assessment. There are two types of challenges at the moment in the stock markets that investors should be aware of. One is earnings are going to be adversely affected by weak external macro and hence, a lot of bottom-up stock picking to ensure you pick up only those companies where earnings growth is coming through despite weak macro is required.

How will be crude price movement in near term? Jonathan Barratt answers
«If you look at OPEC and their announcements in terms of usage, they continue to revise the fact that consumption is actually going down over time. And we do hear that coming from them,» says Jonathan Barratt, CIO, Probis Securities. I think that we have seen this volatile move in crude oil prices ever since we saw Iran launching that ballistic missile against Israel. We saw that spike in crude oil prices. And ever since then, we have been monitoring the movement quite closely. How are you looking at all of these developments and where it is likely to take crude oil prices from here on? Jonathan Barratt: Look, obviously a lot of volatility, crude prices under a lot of pressure. I guess there is a sense of relief that we get that Israel has decided, based on what the US has maybe just told Israel, that they would not attack any of Iran's oil facilities and we get a sense of relief that. And part of that geopolitical risk has sort of come off. But we have also got other influences there in oil prices, which are making it come down at the moment and that is also, of course, China and some of the weak data we are getting out of there. So, there are some major things at the moment and at the moment, they are causing the price of oil to come lower.

Hyundai is for the long haul and do not expect to make quick buck on listing: Dipan Mehta
Dipan Mehta, Director, Elixir Equities, says Hyundai compares very well with Maruti. It may trade at a slight premium to Maruti also because of its product profile and the kind of distribution expansion opportunity which is there for the company and its superior EV strategy as well. If you are a long-term investor with a two, three, five-year view and prefer consumer-oriented stocks, then Hyundai fits that criteria. But, it is for the long haul and one should not expect a quick buck on listing. What are your thoughts on the Hyundai IPO? There was a steady response on day one. But it lacks that zing or that X factor that makes investors excited when it comes to the prospects on listing. Do you concur? Dipan Mehta: That is a good IPO to apply for and that’s how we are advising and a disclosure, we ourselves will be applying in the IPO. But you should not expect an amazing listing like what we have seen with other IPOs. It may be a more tepid listing because of its size and because of the sentiment in the auto industry as well. Even post-listing, you may have a situation where two-three quarters may be quite weak because we are seeing a transient slowdown in the auto sales and that may impact the profitability of all auto companies, Hyundai included.
