markets Strategy economy wellness Experts reports Entry-level sales ride on two wheels this festive season
Executives at two-wheeler companies and dealers predict the momentum to continue in the coming weeks, making this festive season ending with Bhai Dooj on November 3 to be among the best for the industry. They also project sales for the fiscal year to be close to the pre-pandemic record of 21 million units hit in fiscal 2019, boosted by an expected pickup in rural economy on the back of favourable monsoons and good farm output, as well as an increase in minimum support prices for several key crops. Also, the recent government decision raising the dearness allowance is expected to put more money in the hands of 10 million central government employees and pensioners, and a part of this is likely to be spent on buying discretionary items like two-wheelers. Sales of two-wheelers rose 15.4% in the 10-day period of Dussehra ending October 12 compared with the festival days of October 15-24 last year, shows vehicle registration data from the government’s Vahan portal, collated by Goldman Sachs. Other segments of the vehicle industry too posted growth, with sales of cars increasing by 6.6%, three-wheelers 12.3%, light goods vehicles 9.1% and heavy goods vehicles 5.8%.

markets Analysis economy Matthews wellness Trade rights Need earnings growth to keep Indian stock market going: Mark Matthews
"Geopolitical events do not seem to be causing any impact on the world economy. In fact, there is potential for some deceleration in geopolitical problems over the next 12 months," says Mark Matthews, Julius Baer. The disconcerting factor we were discussing is when it comes to the quarterly earnings back home, is there some sort of a sense of a slowdown that could be prolonged due to macro concerns in India? Mark Matthews: I do not know if it is macro concerns, but you are absolutely right. I think the major issue facing India now is the deceleration in earnings growth. And the Nifty will still clock around 10% earnings growth this year, but the most recent quarter, it is looking very flattish.

markets Target Analysis wellness Trade Experts Commentary Maintaining a target of 27,500 for Nifty, 15-16% CAGR earnings growth for next 2 years: Pankaj Pandey
Pankaj Pandey, Head Research, ICICIdirect.com, says typically, any year, one could easily get 10-12% kind of a correction, and multiple corrections in the market. So 6% is already run, at max possibly 4-5% is very much possible. But Pandey thinks that the market ideally should bottom out at current levels. The second half is expected to be better because a lot of ordering, tendering should happen given the fact that H1 was quite soft. A lot of sectors in the second half are expected to do well. ICICIdirect is maintaining a target price of 27,500 for Nifty and about 15-16% CAGR growth in earnings for the next two years. How are you looking at the overall earnings because that is a bit disconcerting? There is such a divergence from what the Street was pencilling in and the kind of commentary and the kind of results that a lot of companies have been putting out and also across-the-board, the slowdown seems to be quite evident. How much of a concern is that? Pankaj Pandey: Overall, this was expected to be a softer quarter. We are already at peak margins of 19-20% for Nifty. So, incrementally margin expansion was definitely not the case. And we all know that in big sectors like IT, the demand is still soft and possibly Q4 is where some bit of a revival can be expected and obviously, we will have US elections impacting the sentiment as well and commodity prices continue to remain soft whether it is for steel, whether it is for cement.

markets COST UPS wellness Trade reports rights Sandip Agarwal on what should investors do with Infosys, TCS, and Wipro stocks
"Tech Mahindra, Infosys all are up 40% in last six to eight months. So, large part of all positive news has been discounted and the stocks are trading at a very-very decent valuation I would put in that way," says Sandip Agarwal, Fund Manager, Sowilo Investment Managers. From these Q2 earnings from the likes of Infosys, Wipro, TCS and HCL Tech reporting numbers, how do you see this possibility of a gradual recovery? Is that going to take some more time you think, there is some softness before it actually comes through or is it really here? Sandip Agarwal: So, yes, I think it has been quite well summed up but let me put this into a perspective. See, you have to remember that barring Wipro, the best part of the year is gone by now because third and fourth quarter have their seasonal challenges. So, this year is gone from the perspective of sequential revenue growth or some positive surprise. Year over year growth could be better. So, everything is now FY26. So, from that perspective and I have been reiterating this in every discussion we had earlier also that things will improve in terms of revenue growth and margins substantially from here on, but also remember that market is very forward-looking and they have all these IT stocks, if you see in last six months they have given phenomenal returns. Tech Mahindra, Infosys all are up 40% in last six to eight months. So, large part of all positive news has been discounted and the stocks are trading at a very-very decent valuation I would put in that way.

markets UPS CEO Election wellness Trade Commentary Better to hide in cash for next few months as earnings are not going to help: Andrew Holland
Andrew Holland, CEO, Avendus Capital, says it will be a margin story this earning season and the talk is on the pressure on margins and how that can be relieved. Holland does not think there is anywhere to hide at the moment. One can only hide in a bit of cash. So, increasing cash levels for the next few months would not be a bad idea given that earnings are not going to help. We have got the US elections and geopolitical problems plus, China is expected to do another stimulus. All of that plays badly for India in the short term. Did you anticipate this kind of carnage on Bajaj Auto post its numbers? Andrew Holland: It was not the numbers per se, it was more the commentary, wasn’t it? Whilst the festive season has picked up a little bit, it is nowhere near anyone's expectations. So, it has really thrown a damper on the whole market because we are all hoping or the market was hoping that the festive season would start to see a pickup in consumption and that is clearly not likely to happen now. On top of that, we anyway expected a weak earning season across the board. The market valuations does not support downgrades whether it is a company or the sector or the market overall. If the earnings continue like this, we could see another 5% correction from here.
