How to invest in stock market? Be 'boring'; avoid investment fads and stick to proven methods for best return
boring technology’ in a blog post that gained popularity in the tech industry. The core idea is that while building systems or making technological choices, it’s often better to opt for well-established, proven technologies, rather than chasing the latest, trendiest options. A key element of McKinley’s essay is the idea of ‘innovation tokens’, which he describes as a limited resource that organisations should spend wisely. In the context of technology choices, McKinley suggests that companies have a finite capacity for innovation and should, therefore, be selective about where they decide to be cutting-edge. If a company uses up some of its innovation tokens in trying out a glamorous new technology that is not tried and tested widely, it will have fewer resources left for innovation in its business domain and in serving its customers. As McKinley puts it, “If you think about innovation as a scarce resource, it starts to make less sense to also be on the front lines of innovating on databases. Or on programming paradigms. The point isn’t that these things can’t work. Of course, they can work. There are many examples of them actually working. But software that’s been around longer tends to need less care and feeding than software that just came out.”

Create harmony in capital gains tax
Taxation of capital gains has again gained currency in the run-up to the budget. Specifically, the treatment of capital gains arising from equity ownership. Theoretically, there is little to justify differential treatment of capital gains arising from separate asset classes.

Tax reforms in Budget 2024 that can boost capital flows and M&A transactions in India
economy in the world. And if it has to retain this status, two elements are critical – first, capital flows from domestic corporates, multinationals as well as financial sponsors must continue to be robust, and second, mergers and acquisitions and other value creation activities need a steroidal push. This Budget, the first one in the third term of the government, thus carries great expectations from investors and India Inc. Here are seven predictions on what one could potentially see in the current Budget, from an M&A standpoint. First, listed company transactions in India today face a peculiar and unique problem. Valuation rules enshrined in the anti-abuse provision contained in section 56 of the Income tax Act, can be misinterpreted, to throw open these transactions to an unintended consequence – that even bona fide trades between unrelated parties at prices discovered transparently and commercially negotiated, could still be subject to artificial pricing norms, and expose the transaction to ordinary income taxes, in the hands of the buyer. Clearly, in the current markets, one would expect a host of listed company transactions – exposing these transactions to a tax on a provision that was never intended to tax such trades, would be something that the government would want to resolve.

Expect double-digit growth in replacement, international business despite rubber price hike: CEAT
CEAT Ltd expects double-digit growth in replacement and international business this fiscal despite a high natural rubber price forcing it to hike product rates, according to its MD and CEO Arnab Banerjee. The company, which has taken price hikes of 2-2.5 per cent in the replacement segment since May, expects another round of increase towards the end of July but is betting on robust demand across categories and turnaround of the rural market to drive growth. «We would like to think that unless there are some unforeseen headwinds, the growth will be steady and positive. We would like to maintain double-digit growth in the replacement segment and international business,» Banerjee told PTI. As for the company's sales to OEM, he said, «We see growth potential much ahead of 3 per cent in the passenger segment for CEAT on the basis of the model pipeline».

UP Kanwar Yatra order: Both Muslim and Hindu owners ask staff to quit, small dhabas fear hit to income
Kanwariyas. He would get Rs 400-600 and at least two meals every day for the job. This year, however, his employer, Mohammad Arsalan, asked him to look for other jobs as he cannot afford to hire extra staff, expecting that his earnings will take a hit due to the Uttar Pradesh government's orders to owners of hotels, restaurants, food carts and eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners at their outlets. After the Muzaffarnagar Police issued the order, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday extended the controversial order across the state. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said similar instructions are already in place in his state as well.

Offers in trunk...your next car’s trying to drive towards you
The average incentive in the second quarter of 2024 rose to Rs 31,258 from Rs 24,350 a year earlier, according to data collated by consultancy firm Jato Dynamics. Diesel cars topped the list with offers totalling Rs 66,203 on average, followed by electric (Rs 31,185), petrol (Rs 29,209) and CNG (Rs 19,353). The industry had seen a surge in sales after the pandemic, driven by pent-up demand, increased preference for personal mobility and low interest rates, allowing manufacturers to raise prices by an average 6.5% during 2022-2023. The latest market trend suggests cooling demand, as well as intensifying competition which may require automakers to reset their strategies, say industry trackers.

Retailers including Shoppers Stop, Lifestyle and VMart bet on a flurry of wedding days in second half of this fiscal
Shoppers Stop, Reliance Retail, Lifestyle and VMart bet on a flurry of nuptial celebrations in the second half of this fiscal to reverse their tepid sales growth and boost demand. There will be about 47 auspicious wedding dates in the second half, three times more than 14 in the first half, they reason. “We are looking at a very strong festive campaign, and weddings will be very, very big as we have somewhere around 50-odd (auspicious) days,” Kavindra Mishra, managing director of Shoppers Stop, said during its first quarter earnings call on Friday. “We believe we have got the right kind of merchandise to be a wedding destination,” he said. In FY24, year-on-year retail sales growth rate declined every month, reflecting weak consumer sentiment across segments such as apparel, footwear, and quick service restaurants (QSR).

Karnataka’s only registered union of IT/ITeS sector employees has called for the state government to reconsider its plan to extend the working hours of employees in the IT/ITeS/BPO sector, terming the move “inhuman” and an “attempt to impose slavery”. Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union, which has more than 10,000 members, also said the plan to amend the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961 is an “open challenge” to the 2 million employees working in the IT/ITeS sector in the state.

Instagram. For three years, the 21-year-old engineering student from Meerut had been battling a persistent headache, along with growing anxiety and creeping disinterest in life. That day in February, as a stream of memes and filtered photos filled his phone screen, a glimmer of hope appeared for Kumar: an account, @Hemant_Mahajan18, promised to cure anxiety “permanently without medicine”. With over 12,000 followers and claims of having helped a couple of thousand people, Mahajan’s “Happy Living” programme seemed just what Kumar needed. It claimed to “cure stress/anxiety in 28 days from its roots” and assured a 100% refund if there was no improvement.

Jio and Retail: The future game changers for Reliance, says Deven Choksey
Reliance earnings because what we are gauging from our experts is that the Street will start looking beyond this time's numbers. Though the O2C has been the biggest drag this time, do you believe that the street will start pencilling in that it could improve in the times ahead and the stock price could have some breather on the back of this? Deven Choksey: Minus the refining cracks where probably the maximum amount of hurt has come on the EBITDA, I guess the numbers are a steady set of numbers. Generally, in the commodity-driven business, and overall, refining cracks have been down, this is bound to happen that you are on a larger base likely to see some dent in the EBITDA. But I do not think that this is going to be a permanent feature.
