The Photogate embarrassment of the British royal family reflects a wider malaise
Princess of Wales with her three children. As it turns out, she clumsily edited a family photo hurriedly taken by her husband and put it out on social media. The image was promptly scrutinised by millions of eyes and many embarrassing errors were pointed out, leading to its withdrawal by major news agencies. She issued a statement owning up to the careless editing attempt but ended up stoking even more malicious and wild speculation about not only her health but also her marriage. Their family, of course, is not an ordinary one like ours are. The British royals are subject to far more inspection and judgement than we all are and must be aware of it. Yet they still try to act «normal», which in this case meant posting a picture perfect family photo for Mother's Day. They were not the only ones to put up lovely, laughing photos with the kids for the occasion. Millions did. It almost seemed as if not posting photos may have led to similar speculation in their own much smaller social (media) circles about the absence. That is what probably prompted the Waleses to post that hasty photo even though the princess is recuperating from surgery and may not have felt like getting dressed up (even in jeans and jacket) to be photographed.

Modi talks of DMK temple boycott in TN & solar, gold cases in Kerala
Narendra Modi on Friday alleged that the INDIA bloc wanted to assume power only to engage in 'loot and corruption.' He attacked the Congress in Kerala over the solar case of 2013 and the DMK-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu. Addressing a BJP rally in Kanyakumari, Modi alleged DMK-Congress have 'history of scams' and the aim behind their efforts to come to power is to 'loot the people.' He underlined that while the Centre has launched several infrastructure development projects in Tamil Nadu and the people benefited from a slew of welfare schemes, the DMK government was 'steeped in corruption.' Referring to the consecration of Ram temple at Ayodhya on January 22, Modi said the DMK government boycotted it and tried to 'prevent telecast' of the event. Modi said this showed the DMK government had 'no respect' for traditions and culture of India. He said in the run-up to the main event, he had visited several historical temples of Tamil Nadu. Modi also tried to take credit for restarting Jallikattu, though it was done by cultural organisations after the Supreme Court lifted the ban. He alleged that while the DMK-Congress dispensation was 'caught napping' when Sri Lankan authorities arrested some Tamil Nadu fishermen recently, he used diplomatic clout to bring them back safe, overlooking the point that the Centre oversaw external affairs. Referring to the attack on AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa in the Tamil Nadu assembly several decades ago, Modi said it showed DMK 'did not respect' women.

Google in trouble with CCI again, this time for violating fair pricing rules
NEW DELHI : Google found itself in deeper trouble in India after the country’s antitrust watchdog ordered an investigation into the tech giant’s pricing methods, saying the company had implemented its policies in a “discriminatory manner". The Competition Commission of India on Friday said it will probe Google’s pricing model within 60 days, without immediately passing a verdict or enforcing penalties. CCI’s decision has wider implications for Google, the dominant mobile operating platform in India, given the watchdog’s earlier rulings as well as the company’s run-ins with the domestic app ecosystem.

EC must restore democracy in J-K, announce dates for LS, assembly polls: Omar Abdullah
Election Commission of India (ECI) should play its role in restoring democracy in Jammu and Kashmir and announce dates for both Parliament as well as assembly polls in the Union Territory, National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah said here on Friday. «We have no expectations from the Election Commission. The EC should play its role as part of its mission of maintaining democracy. It has been 10 years that J-K has not seen an assembly election,» Abdullah told reporters here. Referring to the submission of a report by former President Ram Nath Kovind-led committee on 'one nation one election, the former J-K chief minister said it was a golden opportunity to start the policy from J-K. «The former president has submitted a report on 'one nation, one election'. What can we hope for from them: drum-beating 'one nation one election' if you do not start from J-K. Is it to fool the people?

CT in Pakistan: ICC will never ask BCCI to go against its own government's policy
Champions Trophy in Pakistan remains an option as India's participation cannot be decided by the ICC if there is a government policy against it, a source in the governing body's all-powerful executive board told PTI on Friday. The ICC board meeting is currently underway in Dubai. The Champions Trophy, which will be held in February-March 2025, is not on the agenda but newly-elected PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has stated that he wants to speak with his BCCI counterpart Jay Shah as well as ICC bigwigs on the sidelines, seeking some kind of assurance. However, an ICC Board member, who is privy to the developments, feels that any decision by BCCI, will only be taken closer to the tournament and once again, the idea of using UAE as a potential venue cannot be entirely discarded.

Hezbollah tells Iran it would fight alone in any war with Israel
Hamas under attack in Gaza, the head of Iran's Quds Force visited Beirut in February to discuss the risk posed if Israel next aims at Lebanon's Hezbollah, an offensive that could severely hurt Tehran's main regional partner, seven sources said. In Beirut, Quds chief Esmail Qaani met Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the sources said, for at least the third time since Hamas' deadly Oct. 7 attacks on southern Israel and Israel's devastating retaliatory assault on Gaza. The conversation turned to the possibility of a full Israeli offensive to its north, in Lebanon, the sources said. As well as damaging the Shi'ite Islamist group, such an escalation could pressure Iran to react more forcefully than it has so far since Oct. 7, three of the sources, Iranians within the inner circle of power, said.

Sandeep Tandon on stress test, liquidity & why Quant takes concentrated bets
Sandeep Tandon, CIO, Quant MF, says “if we start looking at risk-adjusted returns, it will be far better. Just looking at PE in isolation without looking at ROC or ROE does not make sense. Similarly, just looking at a few risk measures in isolation does not make sense and that is the reason in our disclosure we have added additional data points also which are risk-adjusted measures and more meaningful rather than just looking at unidirectional risk numbers.” Tandon further says Quant takes concentrated bets because he believes that extraordinary diversification from a mathematical perspective means there is no control on risk. First, let us talk about the stress test. What has been the conclusion at Quant and what has been your finding? Sandeep Tandon: Let me explain the larger thesis. What the regulator wants from us is that we should disclose our liquidity position, our risk-related data points, our concentration in the large, mid, or even concentration from a client perspective. I think it is a good exercise from a larger perspective, more from a transparency point of view.

Even as the launch of spot crypto ETFs has changed the crypto landscape forever, there are still concerns about what the future might hold for these financial products. The 11 ETFs that debuted in the US in January came after a long wait mainly due to regulatory challenges for ETFs.
