Union minister of state Ravneet Singh Bittu has been nominated as party candidate from Rajasthan. Another Union minister of state George Kurian has been made the party candidate for the lone seat of Madhya Pradesh. For two seats of Assam, BJP has announced the names of former Union minister Rameswar Teli and former MLA Mission Ranjan Das. Senior advocate and chairman of Bar Council of India Manan Kumar Mishra has been made the party candidate from Bihar. In Bihar, the BJP has left one seat for ally Upendra Kushwaha who will file nomination on Wednesday.

Setting aside the October 18, 2023, judgment, a bench of justices Abhay Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan said it had restored the conviction of the accused under the Pocso Act and Indian Penal Code. The classes for the academic year 2024-45 for undergraduate (UG) students will commence on August 29. Around 11,224 students have «freezed» their course and college combinations, indicating they are taking additional time to finalise their decisions, it said. Meanwhile, 27,613 students have opted for an upgrade, meaning they have applied to change the college and course preferences allotted by the university, it added.

madrasas which impart religious education to students of other faiths and force them to attend worship practices contrary to their religious teachings will be stopped and legal action taken, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on Tuesday. Yadav issued this warning during a meeting of cabinet ministers. The School Education Department has issued instructions enforcing a ban on religious teaching to students of faiths other than those prescribed by their respective religions, in compliance with Article 28(3) of the Constitution, as per an official release quoting Yadav. The chief minister said that government grants to madrasas (Islamic seminaries) that force students to study or participate in religious practices contrary to their own beliefs will be halted. Additionally, such institutions may face legal actions, including potentially cancelling their recognition.

Canada, has temporarily suspended the entry of new temporary foreign workers for low-wage jobs in the Montreal area. As a result, applications for jobs in the Montreal area paying less than $27.47 per hour will be paused for six months, starting September 3. The decision will not apply to the construction, agriculture, food processing, education and social services sectors. This comes after the country's temporary foreign worker program was described as a 'breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery' in a report by UN investigator Tomoya Obokata, according to an article in Canada's leading daily, the Globe and Mail.

Haryana has sought over 200 more companies of the central forces to ensure conduct of free, fair and peaceful polling as the election for all 90 assembly seats in the state will be held on October 1. Addressing a news conference here, Haryana's Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal said the state has demanded 225 companies of the central forces, of which 70 have been already allotted. The Election Commission had earlier on Friday announced that polls to the 90-member Haryana Assembly will be held on October 1 and the results would be declared on October 4. With the announcement of polls, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in the state. Agarwal said the state has over 2.03 crore voters.

Aditya Birla Finance and AU Small Finance Bank have partnered to launch a co-branded credit card even as the Reserve Bank of India tightened the co-branded card rules. The banking regulator earlier in the year said that branding partners for credit cards cannot access customer data or engage in any transaction after the card is initially issued. The RBI rule is focused on increased scrutiny especially on the partnerships between banks and fintechs firms. The Aditya Birla and AU co-branded card is linked to Visa and RuPay payment networks and will be available in four variants.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said an inquiry led by a woman IPS officer has been ordered into an incident of alleged abuse of two school girls in Badlapur in Thane district. Talking to reporters here, Fadnavis said the state government has appointed Arti Singh, an inspector general-rank Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, to conduct the inquiry. «It will be our endeavour to inquire into the incident at the earliest. We want to file the chargesheet in this case as soon as possible and place the matter before a fast-track court for hearing,» he said. «Our police department will make complete efforts to get such a barbaric and inhuman act punished immediately,» the deputy chief minister added.

investigation team (SIT) of the Karnataka Lokayutka has renewed its request with Governor Thawarchand Gehlot for permission to file a charge-sheet against Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy in a case of renewal of mining lease. The union minister was alleged to have illegally approved a mining lease to Sri Sai Venkateshwara Mineral in Sandur in Ballari district during his first stint as Chief Minister in 2007. The SIT, which completed investigations into the case, had in November last year, submitted a letter to the Governor seeking permission to file charges against the union minister. The second letter assumes significance as it comes within a week after the Governor granted permission to three activists to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in a case of alleged illegal allotment of 14 pricey housing plots to his wife Parvathi in Mysuru. The Congress has been pushing for similar sanctions against the BJP and JDS leaders against whom prosecution has been sought by the Lokayukta SIT.

Aye Finance has raised about $25 million from Goldman Sachs (India) Finance, the non-banking unit of Goldman Sachs in India, in a securitisation deal. The deal, valued Rs 212 crore in local currency, was announced Tuesday. This will free capital for Aye Finance and help it in business expansion. Jio added way more active users than Bharti Airtel in June 2024, but the Sunil Mittal-led telco added more higher-paying 4G and 5G users than its closest rival in that month. Vodafone Idea (Vi) continued to lose active users but gained some 3G and 4G users, according to latest telco subscriber data released by the regulator Tuesday. Jio added nearly 4 million active users to Airtel’s modest 0.67 million additions in June, while Vi lost as many as 2.71 million active users, latest customer data put out by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) showed. Vi’s heavy losses on this score underlined its continuing inability to fight bigger rivals, Jio and Airtel. As per Trai data, Jio, Airtel and Vi’s active user bases were at 440.94 million, 384.83 million and 188.26 million respectively in end-June.
