WhatsApp President BJP announces 10 candidates for Rajya Sabha bypolls
BJP on Tuesday announced names of 10 candidates for Rajya Sabha bypolls across eight states. The party has left one seat each in Bihar and Maharashtra for allies. Union minister of state Ravneet Singh Bittu has been nominated as party candidate from Rajasthan. Another Union minister of state George Kurian has been made the party candidate for the lone seat of Madhya Pradesh. For two seats of Assam, BJP has announced the names of former Union minister Rameswar Teli and former MLA Mission Ranjan Das. Senior advocate and chairman of Bar Council of India Manan Kumar Mishra has been made the party candidate from Bihar. In Bihar, the BJP has left one seat for ally Upendra Kushwaha who will file nomination on Wednesday.

The apex court had initiated a suo motu petition «due to sweeping observations/findings recorded by the division bench of Calcutta High Court» in the ruling. The top court had also opined that the comments made by the high court were sweeping, objectionable, irrelevant, preachy and unwarranted.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi are scheduled to visit Jammu and Srinagar on August 21-22 and are likely to meet some INDIA bloc leaders for possible pre-poll alliances. The visit assumes significance as both Congress and National Conference (NC) have expressed inclination for a strategic 'pre-poll alliance', especially in Jammu division, where the BJP is claiming that it will get a majority of the seats. NC leader and former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah recently said that they were in touch with the Congress top leadership and the newly-appointed J&K Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra is also on record saying that they were open to talks with «like-minded parties» to weave a «respectable alliance» ahead of the assembly polls.

BEML, India's leading defence and heavy engineering PSU, on Tuesday signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with the Directorate of Marine Engineering, Indian Navy. The agreement was signed at the Naval Headquarters in Delhi, with Ajit Kumar Srivastav, Director of Defence at BEML, and Rear Admiral K Srinivas, ACOM (D&R) of the Indian Navy. «This landmark agreement is a pivotal step in enhancing bilateral cooperation for the indigenous design, development, manufacture, testing, and product support of critical marine equipment and systems,» the BEML said in a statement. It also said the partnership aims to strengthen self-reliance in defence production and minimise reliance on foreign imports.

madrasas which impart religious education to students of other faiths and force them to attend worship practices contrary to their religious teachings will be stopped and legal action taken, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on Tuesday. Yadav issued this warning during a meeting of cabinet ministers. The School Education Department has issued instructions enforcing a ban on religious teaching to students of faiths other than those prescribed by their respective religions, in compliance with Article 28(3) of the Constitution, as per an official release quoting Yadav. The chief minister said that government grants to madrasas (Islamic seminaries) that force students to study or participate in religious practices contrary to their own beliefs will be halted. Additionally, such institutions may face legal actions, including potentially cancelling their recognition.

Election WhatsApp peace Assembly polls: Haryana seeks over 200 companies of central forces
Haryana has sought over 200 more companies of the central forces to ensure conduct of free, fair and peaceful polling as the election for all 90 assembly seats in the state will be held on October 1. Addressing a news conference here, Haryana's Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal said the state has demanded 225 companies of the central forces, of which 70 have been already allotted. The Election Commission had earlier on Friday announced that polls to the 90-member Haryana Assembly will be held on October 1 and the results would be declared on October 4. With the announcement of polls, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in the state. Agarwal said the state has over 2.03 crore voters.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said an inquiry led by a woman IPS officer has been ordered into an incident of alleged abuse of two school girls in Badlapur in Thane district. Talking to reporters here, Fadnavis said the state government has appointed Arti Singh, an inspector general-rank Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, to conduct the inquiry. «It will be our endeavour to inquire into the incident at the earliest. We want to file the chargesheet in this case as soon as possible and place the matter before a fast-track court for hearing,» he said. «Our police department will make complete efforts to get such a barbaric and inhuman act punished immediately,» the deputy chief minister added.

investigation team (SIT) of the Karnataka Lokayutka has renewed its request with Governor Thawarchand Gehlot for permission to file a charge-sheet against Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy in a case of renewal of mining lease. The union minister was alleged to have illegally approved a mining lease to Sri Sai Venkateshwara Mineral in Sandur in Ballari district during his first stint as Chief Minister in 2007. The SIT, which completed investigations into the case, had in November last year, submitted a letter to the Governor seeking permission to file charges against the union minister. The second letter assumes significance as it comes within a week after the Governor granted permission to three activists to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in a case of alleged illegal allotment of 14 pricey housing plots to his wife Parvathi in Mysuru. The Congress has been pushing for similar sanctions against the BJP and JDS leaders against whom prosecution has been sought by the Lokayukta SIT.

Jio added nearly 4 million active users to Airtel’s modest 0.67 million additions in June, while Vi lost as many as 2.71 million active users, latest customer data put out by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) showed. Vi’s heavy losses on this score underlined its continuing inability to fight bigger rivals, Jio and Airtel. As per Trai data, Jio, Airtel and Vi’s active user bases were at 440.94 million, 384.83 million and 188.26 million respectively in end-June.
