The special judge for the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cases S M Menjoge, however, allowed his plea seeking copies of investigation files relevant to decide whether there are sufficient grounds to declare Choksi a Fugitive Economic Offender (FEO).

Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the supreme audit institution of Uzbekistan in Tashkent, it said in a statement. SpiceJet on Wednesday reported a 20% per cent drop in consolidated profit for the April-June quarter, as a financial crunch took a toll on its operations. The carrier's profit came at Rs 158.75 crore in Q1 FY25 as against Rs 197.58 crore in the year-ago period.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been awarded the highest number of police gallantry medals — 52 — on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day. The Union Home Ministry declared the names of the awardees on Wednesday. Out of the total medals, 25 decorations have been awarded for action during operations in Jammu and Kashmir while 27 are for operations in the anti-Maoist operations in various Left Wing Extremism affected states, a senior CRPF officer said. Among the awardees is Sub-Inspector Raushan Kumar who has been honoured with the bravery medal posthumously for his gallant action against Maoists in Bihar in February 2019.

Allahabad High Court on Wednesday deferred the hearing on a plea against a Varanasi court order refusing to direct the ASI to survey the Gyanvapi mosque's 'wazukhana', as the counsel for the Muslim side did not appear due to «illness». On July 9, the high court granted a month to the mosque management committee to file a counter affidavit on the revision plea and fixed August 14 for the hearing. On Wednesday, an «illness slip» was sent on behalf of counsel for the Muslim side and a request was made to adjourn the matter. Thereafter, the high court fixed August 22 as the next date of hearing in the case. Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal passed the order on the revision petition filed by Rakhi Singh, one of the plaintiffs in the Shringar Gauri worshipping suit.

cyber scam recently ensnared a prominent academic in a web of deceit, resulting in a staggering loss of Rs 2.81 crore. The victim, Dr. Ruchika Tandon, an associate professor at SGPGIMS Lucknow, was duped over a period of seven days through an elaborate scheme. The scam began with a call from someone posing as an official from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The caller informed Dr. Tandon that her phone would be switched off based on instructions from the police due to several complaints against her number for sending harassing messages.

Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Wednesday quashed charge sheets filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah and others in connection with its money laundering probe linked to alleged irregularities in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). A single bench order passed by Justice Sanjeev Kumar said no predicate offence was made against the individuals and hence the charge sheet and supplementary charge sheet filed by the ED are quashed. The ED had named National Conference chief Abdullah, Ahsan Ahmad Mirza (former treasurer of JKCA), Mir Manzoor Gazanffer (another ex-treasurer of the JKCA) and some others as accused in the charge sheet.

Indian Army's K-9 squad is participating in the 10th edition of India-Sri Lanka joint military exercise 'Mitra Shakti'. The 10th edition of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise Mitra Shakti began on August 12 at the Army Training School, Maduru Oya, Sri Lanka. The Exercise will conclude on August 25. Indian contingent comprising 106 personnel is being represented by a Battalion of Rajputana Rifles along with personnel from other arms and services. The Sri Lankan contingent is being represented by personnel from the Gajaba Regiment of the Sri Lankan Army.

Shivakumar on Wednesday said the government will look into complaints against those who pay Goods and Services Tax and income tax but still avail benefits under the 'guarantee schemes' launched by the Congress government. He also asserted that there was no question of altering or scrapping the guarantee schemes. «As the Congress state president, I am saying that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that there is no question of altering or scrapping the guarantee schemes for any reason,» Shivakumar told reporters. «There are complaints that some people who have more income are availing this benefit. We will review that. That's it. There are complaints that those who are paying income tax and GST are availing it,» he maintained.

SpiceJet Ltd, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked it to ground the three engines by Friday and return them to its lessors — Team France 01 SAS and Sunbird France 02 SAS — in 15 days. It also asked the low-cost carrier to make arrangements for inspection of these engines. The Ajay Singh-led carrier has been struggling to secure funding following consecutive quarterly losses. The airline faces legal action from lessors over unpaid dues and has had requests made to the aviation regulator for de-registering their aircraft.

Ola Electric Mobility on Wednesday reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 347 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2024, which was up from Rs 267 crore reported by the EV two-wheeler maker in the year-ago period. The revenue from operations for the quarter stood at Rs 1,644 crore, which was up by 32.3% from Rs 1,243 crore reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

finance ministry has exempted the income of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) from payment of income tax for five years till fiscal 2027-28. Accordingly, grants/subsidies received from the central government; fees/ subscriptions, including RTI fee, tender fee, sale of scrap, PVC card; authentication, enrolment and updation service charges received; term/fixed deposits; and interest on bank deposits earned by UIDAI would be exempt from income tax. A notification to this effect was issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Ministry of Finance. «This notification shall be applicable for assessment year 2024-2025, 2025-2026, 2026-2027, 2027-2028 and 2028-2029,» it added.
