special session on Aug. 23 to discuss the central bank's decision last month to raise interest rates, government sources said on Tuesday. The special session, to be conducted by the lower house financial affairs committee, is likely to ask Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda to attend, said the sources, who declined to be identified. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had in February asked telcos to ensure a calling name presentation (CNAP) service on mobile phones, a move aimed at combating spam and scam calls. But senior executives of mobile phone operators and handset companies said the proposed service is almost impossible to implement nationally as it won't work on 2G/3G networks unless huge sums are spent on network upgrades. And that is economically unviable, given the low revenue generation from 2G users.

BJP on Monday rejected the Congress' demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into Hindenburg's allegations and said the Opposition party was conspiring to bring about «economic anarchy and instability» in India. coal ministry expects domestic coal-based thermal power plants to have a stock of 39 million tonnes of the dry fuel at the end of this month and 34 million tonnes by September-end, secretary Amrit Lal Meena told ET. The closing stocks are seen much higher from a year earlier — up 39.2% for August and 57% for September — in the critical monsoon period, when evacuation and transport of the fuel becomes a challenge. The current stocks at power plants are at 43.7 million tonnes, enough to meet about 19 days of consumption.

Strategic Minerals, Union Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy announced Monday. This decision was taken during 6th Governing Body meeting of the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET). This not-for-profit trust operationalised by the union Mines Ministry is funded by levies on proceeds from sale of domestically produced minerals in the county. Its purpose is to encourage carrying out of regional and detailed exploration for augmentation of the country’s mineral resources. An official statement said a 25% exploration incentive for agencies engaged in discovering Critical and Strategic Minerals will “significantly enhance exploration efforts in these vital areas, contributing to India's self-reliance in mineral resources.”

Farmers have increased the area under paddy cultivation by 4.28 per cent to 33.18 million hectares, while cotton acreage declined in the ongoing 2024-25 kharif (summer-sown) crop season, according to government data released on Monday. The agriculture ministry reported that paddy sowing rose to 33.18 million hectares as of August 12, up from 31.82 million hectares in the same period last year. The increase in the paddy acreage comes amid forecasts of widespread rainfall across several regions by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As per the ministry's data, pulses acreage marginally increased to 11.74 million hectares in the ongoing kharif season from 11.01 million hectares in the year-ago period.

Max Estates, the property arm of the MaxGroup, has received approval from the Noida authority to overtake a commercial project in sector 16B Noida, by clearing Rs 613 crore dues of the authority. In February 2023, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the resolution plan of Max for the development of a commercial plot measuring 34,697 square meters in Noida under the project name ‘Delhi One’. The NCLT had asked the developer to seek the authority's approval for the implementation of the plan.

Kotak Mahindra Bank on Monday said Sonata Finance Private Ltd and BSS Microfinance Ltd, both wholly-owned subsidiaries of the bank, at their respective board meetings have approved a scheme of amalgamation. As per the scheme of amalgamation approved on Monday, Sonata would merge with BSS Microfinance Ltd on a going concern basis, Kotak Mahindra Bank said in a regulatory filing. The scheme would be subject to the approval of the respective shareholders and creditors of Sonata and BSS and the approval of the concerned National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and other regulatory authorities, it said. The combined net worth of Sonata and BSS is less than 2 per cent of the net worth of the bank, as on March 31, 2024, it said.

Rajya Sabha seats. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma confirmed that the party will field his wife, Mehtab Chandee for the upcoming Gambegre bypoll. These seats fell vacant following the election of Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat in the recently held election. Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Tassa has relinquished his seat after he was elected from Kaziranga seat in the parliamentary polls. There will be by polls in five Assembly seats. BJP is likely to contest three seats and leave one each for its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL).

Jindal Stainless on Monday said it will manufacture customised stainless steel and speciality low-alloy steel sheets for defence projects of BrahMos Aerospace. The company will also supply steel plates from its Hisar plant in Haryana, it said in a statement. Jindal Stainless has been accredited by BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd as a qualified vendor for the manufacturing and supply of steel sheets and plates, it added. JSL MD Abhyuday Jindal said, «We envision an India that is completely Atmanirbhar in its defence requirement. In line with this vision, we are enhancing our capabilities to meet and exceed the stringent conditions for such critical applications.
