BoB to double down on retail in growth push
Bank of Baroda (BoB), India's second largest public sector lender by assets, is stepping up on retail loan growth with renewed focus on home loans, tie-ups with auto companies, and a fresh strategy to target corporate account employees with personal loans as it expects a 20% compound annual growth rate to continue at least for the next 3 years, executive director Sanjay Mudaliar said. The brisk pace in retail loans will mean the proportion of retail in its total loan book could increase to about 32% in the next three years from 27%. Home loans as a percentage of BoB's loan book are relatively lower at 51% compared to 55% for larger peer SBI. Mudaliar said early success in personal and auto loans meant the bank never stepped on the pedal on home loans but that is now changing. «We had an experience in home loans, but it was not scaled up to the extent we were looking for. Now with the personal loans coming under pressure, the bank is going slow on digital lending, and with the ups and downs in auto loans, the shift is happening towards home loans,» he said.

NRI deposits show a dent despite softening rupee
Indian diaspora withdrew more money than it invested in local bank deposits since October last year despite the sharp depreciation of the rupee, possibly indicating a tighter job market overseas, especially in the Gulf countries, as well as a fear of uncertainty in the global economy amid a looming tariff war, said people familiar with the matter. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed that there was a net outflow of $1.5 billion between October 2024 and January this year in non-resident deposits while the rupee depreciated 3.3% during this period. The outstanding NRI (non-resident Indian) deposits stood at $161.2 billion at the end of January, down from $162.7 billion at the end of October last year.

Bangladesh isn't accepting minorities' persecution: MEA to Parliamentary committee
Foreign secretary Vikram Misri along with other senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs briefed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs on the Indo-Bangladesh relations. The panel is chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Officials are also learnt to have expressed concern that the Bangladesh government has «not only not acknowledged the systematic persecution of minorities but has sought to downplay the scale and nature of violence against Hindus since 2024», sources said. The officials also apparently referred to the statement of Mohammed Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government in Bangladesh, where he termed the atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh as media exaggeration. Officials also expressed concern that persecution against minorities has been characterised as «political killings» of Awami League members rather than communal violence. When asked about the Bangladesh Army, it was suggested that they are out of barracks to take control of the law and order in the neighbouring nation. Officials suggested that India is interested in advancing mutual interests and priorities with Bangladesh, sources said.

Need to compress time to implement trademarks, copyrights: Piyush Goyal
Piyush Goyal Wednesday said that the time taken to implement trademarks and copyrights needs to be compressed and any delays done away with. “Our trademark filings are the sixth largest in the world today. Our patent grants last year was about 100,000, maybe slightly less, because last year we were able to take off, shed off a lot of the backlog,” Goyal said at the National Intellectual Property (IPR) awards. He said as people are getting confidence that patents are being sorted out and granted in a record time, the enthusiasm to file patents in India is also improving and increasing. He said that the government is trying to encourage the IPR ecosystem to develop in India but trademark is still one area which takes “pretty long”.

637 projects facing delays due to various reasons: Nitin Gadkari
Bharatmala Pariyojana Scheme, have faced delays primarily due to factors like land acquisition issues and financial difficulties faced by contractors, Parliament was informed Wednesday. Besides force majeure events, scarcity of construction materials, etc have also caused delays in the projects, Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said in a reply to Rajya Sabha. «The implementation of 637 projects, including those under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Scheme, has faced delays...,» the Minister said. To overcome these challenges and expedite project execution, the government has undertaken various initiatives, Gadkari said… These include streamlining and expediting land acquisition process, revamping Parivesh Portal to facilitate faster forest and environmental clearances, enabling online approval of General Arrangement Drawing (GAD) of Road Over Bridge/Road Under Bridge (ROB/RUB) from the Railways, and conducting review meetings at various levels with all stakeholders, including state governments, he said. On the financial implication, Gadkari said it does not arise in every delayed project. The minister said if delay is not attributable to the contractor, price escalation is paid as per contract conditions, which may or may not result in additional cost, depending upon final value of price escalation determined on actual completion of the project.

Mumbai to get new policy for iconic buildings: Eknath Shinde
Eknath Shinde told the legislative council on Wednesday. «Some iconic buildings from the British era have given Mumbai a unique identity. To preserve this legacy and promote architecturally distinctive buildings in Mumbai, the state government has prepared a special policy,» Shinde said. Highlighting the importance of such developments, Shinde said that cities across the world are known for their unique urban planning, neighbourhoods, and landmark buildings. «Mumbai too, being a world-class city, deserves to encourage such iconic structures that will not only beautify the city but also strengthen its appeal as a tourist destination,» he said. The deputy CM said that the current Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) applicable to Mumbai pose limitations in facilitating the construction of distinctive structures. To address this, he said, the government has proposed separate provisions within the existing regulations to accommodate buildings that can become a symbol of the metropolis.
