National Anti-Doping Agency has once again suspended Olympic Medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia for an anti-doping rule violation. Earlier this month, the National Anti-Doping Agency's Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) revoked the provisional suspension imposed on Bajrang Punia till NADA issues a Notice of Charge to the wrestler, who had refused to provide his sample for dope test after the selection trials in March. NADA had suspended Tokyo Games bronze medallist Bajrang on April 23 and subsequently the world governing body UWW also took similar action. The trials to pick the men's national team for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Bishkek were held in Sonepat on March 10 and Bajrang had walked off the venue without providing his urine sample after losing a bout.

Delhi Water Minister Atishi on Sunday said the Haryana government has closed all gates of Hathnikund Barrage that is used to release water for Delhi, and added that she will continue her indefinite hunger strike over it. Atishi's indefinite hunger strike to demand water for Delhi, which is under the grip of a severe water crisis and scorching heat, entered the third day here. In a video message on X, she said, «I have been on a hunger strike to get Delhi's share of water. Haryana government is releasing 100 MGD water less which is depriving nearly 28 lakh people of Delhi of water. Some journalists have said that the Hathnikund Barrage is full of water but Haryana government has shut all gates to stop that water from reaching the national capital.» The minister urged the Haryana government to release water for Delhi.

The companies did not disclose the deal size. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said less than two per cent of the total 58.62 lakh taxpayers under Central GST administration has been sent tax notices and the intention of the government is to make GST assessees life easier by reducing compliance requirements. «I want to reassure the assesses that our intent is to make GST assessees life easier, we are working towards less and less compliance. On behalf of the CGST, notices are not being sent left, right and centre. Only 1.96 per cent of all active tax assessees have been sent notices from Central GST,» Sitharaman said. Addressing the media post the GST Council meeting, the Minister said as of December 31, 2023, only 1.96 per cent of all active tax assessees have been sent notices from the Central GST (CGST). Around 1.14 lakh assessees have been sent notices by the CGST out of total 58.62 lakh assessees. The Council in its 53rd meeting on Saturday took a host of taxpayer-friendly steps including waiving interest and penalties for demand notices for fiscal years 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20, if the full tax demand is paid by March 31, 2025.

Winners of six critical mineral blocks under the first round of auctions will be announced on Monday. The preferred bidder for the hotly contested Katghora block will be among those being unveiled, making it India’s first lithium and rare earth element (REE) mine. This bid round was launched on November 23 last year with 20 mines. But auctions for 14 of these blocks was annulled citing tepid response. Another 18 blocks were to be auctioned in the second round but bids for 14 have been scrapped due to the poor response. According to officials aware of the first round of bids, blocks holding phosphorite and fertiliser minerals have got 5-6 bids per mine. The lithium block in Chhattisgarh has got more than 10 bids while graphite mines have 4-5 bidders per block.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the intention of the central government has always been to bring petrol and diesel under GST, and it is now up to the states to come together and decide on the rate. She said a provision has already been made by former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley by including petrol and diesel into GST law. What is remaining is for the states to come together to discuss and decide on the rate of the levy. «The intention of the GST, as was brought in by former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, was to have petrol and diesel in GST. It is up to the states now… to decide on the rate. The intent of my predecessor was very clear, we want petrol and diesel to come into GST,» Sitharaman said. When GST was introduced on July 1, 2017, amalgamating over a dozen central and state levies, five commodities — crude oil, natural gas, petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) — were included in GST law but it was decided that it would be taxed under GST at a later date.

GST Council meeting on Saturday recommended the reduction of Goods and Service Tax (GST) on all kinds of carton boxes from 18 per cent to 12 per cent. Himachal Pradesh has been persistently pleading for the reduction of GST on apple carton boxes and this reduction will help both horticulturists and the industry in saving costs, a statement issued here said. Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan, representing the State, thanked the council for taking the decision unanimously on the proposal of the state. He said that the decision would also help the industry reduce working capital costs. The Council took a number of decisions to ease the compliance burden and grievances of small and medium taxpayers.
