India-UK FTA talks: Pending issues to be resolved after UK polls
India-UK bilateral trade pact such as the one about minimum import price (MIP) for Scotch whisky and those related to finalisation of a bilateral investment treaty will be discussed after the general elections in Britain, a top official said. The issues that need to be ironed out include duties in sectors like electric vehicles, alcoholic beverages and services. General elections in the UK will be held on July 4. «The outstanding issues to seal the deal will be resolved once the general elections in the UK are over,» said L Satya Srinivas, additional secretary, department of commerce.

Tenth round of commercial coal block auction to kick off next week
ministry on Friday said it will launch the 10th round of commercial coal block auctions next week with about 62 mines to be offered without end user restrictions. Coal produced from the 62 blocks is permitted to be sold by the companies in the free market. So far, nine rounds of commercial coal auctions have taken place since 2020 and 107 coal blocks have been auctioned with 256 million tonnes peak rated capacity.

The NTA will conduct UGC-NET in OMR mode across India on June 18. «NTA plans to issue UGC-NET admit cards by tonight. Saudi, French funds to acquire 38% of Heathrow airport
Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund and a French private equity group will acquire a 38-percent stake in Heathrow, the London airport's biggest shareholder said Friday. Heathrow, one of the world's busiest airports, is owned by the consortium FGP Topco Limited with Spanish infrastructure giant Ferrovial holding the lead role with a 25-percent stake.

Forex reserves soar to a new high of $655.8 billion as on June 7
foreign exchange reserves touched a fresh high of $655.8 billion for the second consecutive time in the week ended 7th June, central bank data showed. The total reserves rose by $4.3 billion and were primarily driven by foreign currency assets which rose $3.7 billion to $576.3 billion. The last record high was just a week ago when the reserves touched $651.5 billion. The rise in the foreign exchange reserves was likely driven by the RBI’s dollar purchases after the rupee appreciated last week.

SC stays NCLAT's order initiating insolvency proceedings against Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam
Supreme Court on Friday stayed the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal’s order that initiated insolvency proceedings against Uttar Pradesh government-owned Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam. A vacation Bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice Augustine George Masish also issued a notice to its operational creditor S.R.V. Techno Engineering and posted the matter for further hearing on July 26. S.R.V. Techno Engineering had in 2019 moved the National Company Law Tribunal, Allahabad bench, seeking to initiate insolvency proceedings against Purvanchal for failing to pay debt of Rs 4.43 crore including interest. Thereafter, S.R.V also filed arbitration proceedings against the UP firm Nigam in 2022 where an arbitrator awarded Rs 1.73 crore to it in 2023.

Heat wave continues in Punjab, Haryana; Abohar sizzles at 47.6 deg C
Heat wave conditions continued unabated in Haryana and Punjab, with Abohar sizzling at 47.6 degrees Celsius, the Met Centre here said on Friday. Blistering heat also continued to prevail in Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, which recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius, according to the centre's weather report. While blistering heat swept Abohar in Punjab, intense heat also prevailed in Gurdaspur, which recorded a maximum of 45.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Patiala, which registered a high of 45.2 degrees Celsius, it said. Amritsar and Ludhiana also reeled under intense heat at 44.8 degrees Celsius and 44.2 degrees Celsius, respectively, the weather office said.

Nadda chaired a high-level meeting on attaining targeted health goals in the first 100 days of formation of the new government, with senior officials of the ministry here today, an official statement said. He was joined by ministers of state for health Anupriya Patel and Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav. Taking stock of the overview of the ministry's functioning, Nadda directed that emphasis should be laid on the quality of health facilities and health systems, the statement stated.

Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday reviewed the security, punctuality and services in stations and trains during a meeting with members and officials of the Railway Board, zones and divisions. At the high-level meeting, held through video-conferencing, the minister emphasized that safety and infrastructure are paramount and there cannot be any compromise on this front, officials said. «A detailed discussion on all issues related to passenger safety and amenities took place. The special focus of the meeting was on ways to improve services as well as punctuality of trains and avoid overcrowding by identifying busy routes and introducing special trains on them,» a senior railway official, who attended the meeting, said. «Also, regular services of equipment such as ACs, fans, and water coolers at stations to be ensured during summer rush,» he said.

TRAI broadens scope of telecom consumer education fund
consumer education and protection. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Friday amended regulations 6 and 13 of the Telecommunication Consumers Education and Protection Fund (TCEPF) principal rules to enable utilisation of the fund for expenses relating to preparation, maintenance, audit of accounts, and for the participation of representatives of consumer groups attending meetings of the Committee for Utilisation of Telecommunication Consumers Education & Protection Fund (CUTCEF). The regulator, though, dismissed telcos’ call for tapping the TCEPF corpus for conducting consumer education workshops, saying operators are already arranging such consumer outreach programs regularly to improve customer experience as mandated by Trai. It also rejected industry demands for increasing the representation of telecom service providers in the CUTCEF, saying the current telco presence in the panel is adequate.

RBI imposes Rs 1.45 cr penalty on Central Bank of India
penalty of Rs 1.45 crore on the Central Bank of India for non-compliance with certain directions related to 'loans and advances' and 'customer protection'. The RBI had conducted a statutory inspection for Supervisory Evaluation (ISE 2022) of the Central Bank of India with reference to its financial position as of March 31, 2022. A notice was issued to the bank, advising it to show cause as to why a penalty should not be imposed on it for its failure to comply with the directions, the RBI said. After considering the bank's response, the RBI found that charges against the bank were sustained.

CBI conducts searches at 14 locations in connection with Rs 5717-cr fraud by SKS Power Generation
CBI conducted searches at 14 locations on Friday after registering an FIR into the alleged Rs 5717-crore bank fraud by Chhattisgarh-based SKS Power Generation Ltd, officials said. In its FIR, registered on the orders of Allahabad High Court, the CBI has alleged that company promoted by SKS Ispat and Power Ltd. (SKSIPL) had availed Rs 6,170 crore loan from State Bank of India (SBI), L&T Infrastructure Finance Limited, PTC India Finance Limited, and State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur which resulted in the default of Rs 5717 crore, they said. The CBI has booked Anil Mahabir Gupta, Director of SKS Power Generation (Chhattisgarh) Ltd, Anish Anil Gupta, Director of SKS Ispat and Power Limited, Mumbai and 26 others including two officers of State Bank of India, they said.

Arvind Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar in the case against him for allegedly assaulting AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal. Earlier on June 7, a trial court in Tis Hazari had refused to grant him bail, saying he was facing «grave and serious» charges and that there was an apprehension that he could influence witnesses. In his plea before the high court, Kumar said the trial court failed to consider the fact that his further custody was not required as all evidence has been collected by the investigating officer and statements of witnesses have also been recorded.
