International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission and Pakistan have made significant progress towards reaching a staff-level agreement for an extended fund facility, the global lender said on Friday. The unit of Tata Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates, is in talks with lenders including State Bank of India, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank for the loan, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. India’s largest local currency loan so for this year was Assam Bio Refinery Pvt.’s deal of $365 million in February. If Tata Power’s planned borrowing finalizes with a size anywhere near $1 billion, it would take that title.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the killing of an elderly woman in Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district. Bose directed Banerjee to take immediate action and submit an action taken report to him, a source told PTI. In an official communication, Bose «cautioned» Banerjee to end what he described as a «blood bath» and ensure all necessary actions are taken within the parameters of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The government is in the process of finalising the composition of the board of Shipping Corporation of India Land and Assets Ltd (SCILAL), created by hiving off the non-core real estate assets of SCI, to comply with regulatory requirements for the entity's listing. The Centre will invite financial bids for its entire 63.75% stake in SCI soon after the demerged entity, SCILAL, is listed. While SCILAL will remain with the government, SCI, with its core assets, will be privatised. Last year, the Maharashtra government waived off the stamp duty pertaining to the demerger of SCILAL, acceding to the Centre's request. The stamp duty, according to industry estimates, was in excess of ₹250 crore. With this, the government had crossed a key stage in its bid to get SCILAL listed. «These (privatisation of SCI and NMDC Steel) will be pursued vigorously after the election,» said the person quoted above.

Investments by private equity and venture capital funds declined by 35 per cent to USD 4.4 billion in April compared with USD 6.8 billion in the year-ago period, a report said on Thursday. The number of deals in April stood at 98, which was 56 per cent higher than the year-ago period, the report by EY, a consultancy firm, and industry lobby grouping IVCA said. "PE/VC investors continue to remain cautious due to global uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, and the ongoing Indian general elections," the consultancy firm's partner Vivek Soni said, adding that the activity will be subdued till the outcome of the election is decided. In April 2024, there were nine large deals of over USD 100 million, worth USD 3.1 billion, which is a 48 per cent decrease compared to the USD 6 billion across 11 deals in April 2023, the report said.
