central forces deployed in West Bengal for the Lok Sabha polls should be kept for three more months after the elections, leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP said on Monday. Speaking to reporters after meeting the Election Commission-appointed special observer, Adhikari said this would help in preventing post-poll violence, which led to a slew of deaths following the 2021 assembly elections and the 2023 panchayat polls. He said that he would write to Governor CV Ananda Bose, the state's chief secretary and Union home secretary with the demand. Reacting to Adhikari's statement, the TMC said it showed a «defeatist mentality».

Mehbooba Mufti on Monday alleged her party became the «biggest target» after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and its leaders were either «lured or blackmailed» to break away from it. Mehbooba, who is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Anantnag-Rajouri seat, was speaking to reporters after visiting the grave of her father and PDP founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in Bijbehara here. «After 2019, the PDP became the biggest target. The party was broken and our leaders were either lured or blackmailed to break away from the party. I tried to raise my voice against their oppression after 2019 and me and my family members have faced many difficulties due to that, but I stood my ground,» the PDP chief said without naming anyone. «They think that if my voice reaches the Parliament, they might face problems,» she said.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) Monday named its candidates for three more Lok Sabha seats in Punjab in its second list for the election, fielding slain gangster Jaipal Bhullar's father from Ferozepur. The Simranjit Singh Mann-led party fielded his son Emaan Singh Mann from the Amritsar seat and Harpal Singh Baler from Khadoor Sahib. Bhupinder Singh Bhullar, whom the SAD (Amritsar) fielded from the Ferozepur Lok Sabha seat, is a retired inspector of the Punjab Police. His son Jaipal Bhullar, along with another gangster, was gunned down in an encounter with police in Kolkata in 2021. Jaipal Bhullar had more than 40 criminal cases against him in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Tata Advanced Systems Limited on Monday announced the «successful deployment» into space of its sub-metre optical satellite that was assembled and tested in India. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket launched TSAT-1A satellite from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, in the US on Sunday (April 7), Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) said in a statement. «TSAT-1A will deliver high-resolution optical satellite images with increased collection capacity, dynamic range, and low-latency delivery through its multispectral and hyperspectral capabilities,» the company said. A wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, TASL is a significant player for aerospace and defence solutions in India.

Coffee shipments from India rose 13.35 per cent to 1,25,631 tonnes during January-March period of this year on higher demand for Robusta coffee, according to the official data. The country had exported 1,10,830 tonnes of coffee in the same period in 2023. India, Asia's third-largest producer and exporter, grows Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee. Arabica coffee bean has lesser caffeine content than the Robusta. Arabica has a sweet and smoother taste, while the Robusta is generally more bitter and harsher on the taste buds.
