Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his deputy Chowna Mein are among 10 BJP candidates who were elected unopposed in the state assembly polls, an official said on Saturday. Khandu and nine others were elected unopposed following the closure of the nomination withdrawal period, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Pawan Kumar Sain told reporters here. Khandu was the only person to file a nomination from the Mukto assembly constituency in Tawang district, while Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein won the Chowkham seat uncontested after his lone rival Bayamso Kri of the Congress withdrew his nomination on Saturday, he said. «Single nomination paper has been filed in six assembly constituencies while in four others, opposition candidates withdrew their papers,» he said.

AAP is expecting more than one lakh people from Punjab to participate in the INDIA bloc's rally in Delhi on Sunday, said a senior party leader on Saturday. The opposition INDIA bloc will hold a 'Maharally' at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on March 31 to «safeguard» the country's interests and democracy, the Aam Aadmi Party had earlier said. Congress in Telangana, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Vijaya Laxmi R Gadwal joined the party here on Saturday. Vijaya Laxmi joining Congress is expected to help the party in the GHMC limits in the Lok Sabha polls. Popular Front of India (PFI) have been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on money-laundering charges, official sources said on Saturday. Abdul Khader Puttur, Anshad Baddrudin and Firoz K were working as physical trainers for the PFI, the sources said, adding that they were arrested under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The arrested accused were produced before a special court here on Saturday. The agency has accused the three men of «imparting» weapons training to the PFI cadre and receiving substantial funds from the proscribed organisation for the same.

Patna High Court has observed that the use of "filthy language" by an estranged couple, who call each other names like "bhoot" (ghost) and "pishach" (vampire), does not tantamount to "cruelty". The remarks came from a single-judge bench of Justice Bibek Chaudhuri, who was hearing a petition filed by Sahdeo Gupta and his son Naresh Kumar Gupta, both residents of Bokaro in adjoining Jharkhand. The father-son duo had challenged an order passed by courts in Bihar's Nalanda district, on a complaint filed by Naresh Gupta's divorced wife in Nawada, her native place. The complainant had filed a case against her husband and father-in-law, way back in 1994, accusing them of physical and material torture to press for the demand for a car in dowry.

Shiv Sena leader Vijay Shivtare, who had declared that he would contest the Lok Sabha polls as an independent candidate from Maharashtra's Baramati constituency, changed his stand on Saturday. The leader of the Eknath Shinde-led party said he won't contest the polls from Baramati in Pune district, which is the political stronghold of NCP founder Sharad Pawar's family, and instead campaign for the ruling Mahayuti alliance. Shivtare's announcement comes amid speculation that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar could be fielded from there as a candidate of the ruling NCP faction. Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has asked candidates aspiring for party tickets in the Lok Sabha and Odisha Assembly elections to deposit Rs 50,000 each for supply of campaign materials. OPCC president Sarat Pattanayak has written letter to the prospective candidates in this regard. Pattnayak said the OPCC is open to accept cheques of Rs 50,000 from shortlisted candidates on behalf of the party to supply branding and campaign materials of an equivalent value to them. «The cheque will be in favour of OPCC and not in the name of any individual leader...,» he said.

Central Excise divisions in Kerala are carrying out patrolling on the roads to check for black money and election freebies in connection with the coming Lok Sabha polls in the state on April 26, a customs official said. Central Excise and Customs officers from the Cochin Headquarters Anti-Evasion Flying Squad and all divisions in the state will be carrying out the checking till election day, the official said.

Jitan Ram Manjhi, who is the NDA nominee from the Gaya seat, owns movable assets worth Rs 11.32 lakh and has Rs 49,000 cash in hand, according to the affidavit filed by him. Manjhi filed his nomination for the Gaya constituency on Thursday. Voting for the first phase of elections in Gaya, Nawada, Jamui and Aurangabad is scheduled to be held on April 19. As per the affidavit, he owns immovable assets worth Rs 13.50 lakh, while his wife Shanti Devi has immovable assets to the tune of Rs 5.38 lakh. In the 2019 polls, the former CM had declared movable assets worth Rs 10.2 lakh and Rs 40,000 cash in hand.

JSW Steel on Saturday announced commissioning of a hot strip mill at its integrated steel plant in Vijayanagar, Karnataka. The company has also made first dispatch of steel products from the mill having an annual capacity of 5 million tonnes (MT), JSW Steel said in an exchange filing. "JSW Vijayanagar Metallics Ltd (JVML), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company, today successfully commissioned its hot strip mill (HSM) at Vijayanagar plant with a capacity of 5 MTPA and has made its first dispatch," the company said. The HSM facility has the capability of manufacturing plates and coils and is equipped with advanced features such as digital reheating furnaces, evaporative cooling system and waste heat recovery system, among others.

ED in connection with the excise policy case, has been fielded by the BJP's ally TDP in the Lok Sabha polls, senior AAP leaders and Delhi Ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged in a press conference. «I challenge the ED if it is an independent agency to bring in record this connection and probe it,» Atishi said and alleged that the BJP has connections with the so-called 'South Lobby' of liquor traders. No immediate reaction was available from the BJP on AAP's allegation.

A total of 168 roads, including three National Highways, were closed for vehicular traffic in the state on Friday night as per the data of the state emergency operation centre. Most of these roads are in a difficult terrain in Lahaul and Spiti, where 159 roads are still to be opened.

Congress on Saturday named K V Gowtham as its Kolar Lok Sabha candidate, ending imbrolgio within the party over the issue. Gowtham is the Bengaluru Central district Congress committee president. Hailing from Kolar, Gowtham is the son of former Bengaluru Mayor K V Vijay Kumar. Gowtham's candidature was in the offing ever since the discontent started brewing in the Kolar unit with five Congress legislators from the district and Karnataka Minister for Food and Civil Supplies K H Muniyappa threatening to resign over the issue. While Muniyappa wanted his son-in-law Chikka Peddanna to be fielded from Kolar and lobbied hard for him, the five legislators including minister M C Sudhakar threatened to resign enmasse if Peddanna was given a ticket. One more legislator said he will wait for the outcome before taking the 'final call'.
