Bank of India on Sunday announced that it has been issued a demand notice totaling Rs 1,127.72 crore by the Income Tax Department's Assessment Unit, pertaining to the assessment year 2016-17. The Bank has received a demand notice under section 156 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, pertaining to the annual year (AY) 2016- 17 wherein certain disallowances have been made, it said in an exchange filing. According to the exchange filing the Bank is in the process of filing an appeal before the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), National Faceless Appeal Centre (NFAC) against the said order within the prescribed timelines.

Sadanand Vasant Date, who bravely fought terrorists during the 26/11 Mumbai attack, on Sunday took over the reins of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), according to an official statement. Date, a 1990 batch Indian Police Service officer of Maharashtra cadre, succeeded Dinkar Gupta, who superannuated on Sunday. Before joining the NIA, Date was serving as the chief of Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Maharashtra. He has held several important positions in Maharashtra, including thoseof Police Commissioner of Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar, Joint Commissioner Law and order, and Joint Commissioner Crime Branch Mumbai, said the statement issued by the NIA.

NTPC on Sunday said it has logged an all-time high annual electricity generation of 422 billion units in 2023-24. During 2023-24, the NTPC coal stations recorded a plant load factor (PLF, or capacity utilisation) of 77 per cent, NTPC said in a statement. According to the statement, NTPC Ltd, India's largest power generating company, recorded its highest-ever yearly generation of 422 billion units in 2023-24, registering a growth of nearly 6 per cent over 2022-23. The company had on September 1, 2023 recorded the highest-ever single-day generation of 1,428 million units.

Sebastien Lecornu said France is to deliver «hundreds» of armoured vehicles by the beginning of next year to Ukraine as part of a new package of military aid for the country that just entered its third year since the Russian invasion. In an interview with the French newspaper La Tribune's Sunday edition, Lecornu said that «to hold such an extensive front line, the Ukrainian army needs, for example, our armoured personnel carriers. It's absolutely key for troop mobility». The French military is currently replacing its old VAB armoured personnel carriers that started being used in 1979 by a new generation of armoured vehicles. «This old equipment, still operational, is going directly to Ukraine in large quantities. We're talking about hundreds (of vehicles) in 2024 and early 2025,» Lecornu said. Lecornu also said France will provide Ukraine with more anti-aircraft missiles.

Reliance Industries, marginally to USD 9.87 per million British thermal unit in line with softening of benchmark international gas prices, an official notification said. However, the price of gas that is used for making CNG for fuelling automobiles or piping to household kitchens for cooking purposes will remain unchanged due to a price cap that is set at 30 per cent less than market rates such as that paid to Reliance. For the six-month period starting April 1, the price of gas from deepsea and high-pressure, high-temperature (HPTP) areas has been cut to USD 9.87 per mmBtu from USD 9.96, oil ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) said in a notification. This is the third straight bi-annual reduction in rates for difficult fields. Price was for six months beginning October 1, 2023 slashed 18 per cent to USD 9.96 per mmBtu from USD 12.12 for the April to September 2023 period. Prior to that, the rate was a record USD 12.46 for October 2022 to March 2023.

Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on April 1 a Gyanvapi mosque management committee's plea against an Allahabad High Court decision upholding a lower court's order allowing Hindu prayers in the southern cellar of the mosque. A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the plea of Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Committee, which manages the affairs of the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, challenging the HC's February 26 decision. The high court had dismissed the committee's plea in which it had challenged the district court's January 31 order allowing Hindus to offer prayers in the cellar. While dismissing the plea of the mosque committee on February 26, the high court had observed that the Uttar Pradesh government's 1993 decision of stopping worship rituals inside the "Vyas Tehkhana" — located at the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi — was «illegal».

NTPC has closed down its Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-I of 220 MW permanently. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday mocked the BJP's target of winning 400-plus seats in the Lok Sabha polls and challenged the saffron camp to win at least 200 constituencies. Banerjee also asserted that she won't allow the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act in the state.
