Remember your school or college days when some seemingly “cool” individuals would hang out only with “their group” — be it for lunch, projects or other activities? Recall how that made you feel. Isolated? Rejected? These are the experiences of an individual who tries to survive in a work environment that has cliques.
A clique is basically a group of people who share similar interests and so like to spend time together. However, such groups become a problem at workplaces as they make others feel unwelcome or unwanted.
It may not be possible for the management to completely get rid of such cliques, so the question is what can you do to survive these groups without becoming pretentious or losing your own identity, while also creating a space for yourself. Here are a few tips that might come in handy, especially if you are a fresher trying to settle in at a clique-heavy workplace.
1. First, observe them: As a fresher, if you feel that the moment you spot a clique you have to interact or introduce yourself, stop right there. Take time to analyse the workplace dynamics before aligning yourself with any group. Just spend the first few days normally greeting everyone and observing from afar how various groups of people interact. This will offer you some clarity about who to form long-term relationships with or who has the capacity to influence decisions within a team.
