6 GHz spectrum band, which offers 5G-like internet speeds upto 10 Gbps. On one side are global tech biggies such as Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Cisco, Qualcomm, Intel and Netflix.
On the other – telcos, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. The tech giants want the 6 GHz band delicensed to boost affordable broadband connectivity across rural India via WiFi.
But telcos call it a bad idea, and instead want the 6GHz band auctioned and used for 5G services now, and 6G in future. The ball is in the court of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) which is weighing the pros and cons.
