Congress' floor leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, on Saturday compared his suspension from the House over a contentious comment he had made during the debate on the no-trust motion to a case of hanging him before a trial and said he could go to the court against that. Referring to the Lok Sabha suspending him after the government moved a motion for that, and then referring the matter to the privileges committee for further probe, Chowdhury said at an All India Congress Committee press conference, «I have been hanged first and thereafter I will have to face the trial.
This is a peculiar situation. With all respect to the speaker, I must say I can't contradict the direction of the chair, but if I find that this kind of situation could be resolved by the court, I may try that because otherwise the essence of the Indian Parliament will be done away with.
This is a precarious as well as regressive step taken by the government that will certainly undermine the spirit of parliamentary democracy.» He also said he would appear before the privileges committee if he was called. If Chowdhury indeed moves the court to challenge his suspension, it could also spur a debate about the borders of powers of the legislature and the judiciary.
