After furore over BHU molestation, boundary wall for IIT okayed
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) inside the Banaras Hindu University campus from the rest of the varsity, following a female student's molestation was criticised by a section of BHU students.
Massive protests had broken out on Thursday at IIT-BHU after a student complained that she was molested by three unidentified men on a motorcycle late on Wednesday night when she was taking a walk in the campus with a male friend. According to her complaint, the accused kissed her forcibly, stripped and made videos of her.
A complaint has been registered against unidentified men. The incident sparked widespread anger inside campus over lack of security.
By Thursday night, students called off their protests after the BHU administration issued a statement that following a discussion between the Varanasi commissioner and the Union education ministry on constructing a boundary wall for IIT, a joint committee of CPWD officials and IIT-BHU professors will be constituted and entrusted with the task of surveying the campus for the purpose.
The committee will submit its report in a week's time, following which the commissioner will facilitate approval and funding from the government.
It was also informed that CCTV cameras will be installed at sensitive locations including girls' hostels at the earliest.
There were no CCTV cameras at the site where the incident took place, police sources told ET.
The proposal to construct a boundary wall has sparked opposition from a section of students, who made their dissent known on social media and by staging sit-ins. «The partition of BHU is an insult to the struggle carried out by Kashi Naresh, Darbhanga naresh and Madan Mohan Malviya,» said 'BHU Voice' on a social media platform.
