tick-borne disease has left halth officials worried in the United States. Called Babesiosis, the new disease has been showing an upward trend in the US.
Babesiosis is caused by the bite of a black-legged tick infected with Babesia microti, a parasite that infects red blood cells. The infection can range from mild to severe, and some people may not show symptoms.
Paul Auwaerter, a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, noted, “Babesiosis is less common than Lyme disease but tracks in the same areas. And it’s worth knowing about because it can be serious, especially for people who are immunocompromised.”
The disease does not spread from person to person but can be transmitted through the bite of an infected tick, blood transfusion, or from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy or delivery.
The elderly and individuals with compromised immunity, such as cancer or HIV patients, or those who have had an organ transplant, are at a higher risk. Babesiosis is more prevalent during spring, summer, and fall.
